Silver Fir is supposed to go into Rampart at Hyak next summer, instead of the backside.

Public input sought about new chairlift

Brigitte Petersen

Wednesday July 09, 2008
Marmot Basin may have a new chairlift to whisk skiers and snowboarders up the mountain next season if final approval is received.
An environmental assessment has been prepared for the removal of Marmot’s Tranquilizer chair and kiefer T-bar to make way for a new detachable four or six-passenger chairlift.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency Registry invites public input as part of the assessment process.
Canadians across the country may offer their written comments about the project until July 17.
“The new lift will get us into the 21st century,” said Dave Gibson, president and chief executive officer of Marmot Basin.
“It will be a huge benefit for skiers.”
Gibson said replacing the old lifts with newer technology is part of Marmot’s long-range plan for improvements. He said he hopes the environmental assessment process goes smoothly to allow for work to be completed in time for the upcoming season.
“There’s still a window of opportunity,” he said.
Construction is expected to take about six months to complete.

Marmot Basin is currently able to accommodate a maximum of about 4,600 skiers a day on its 84 runs. With the new lift, that number is expected to increase to 5,540.
More than half of a hectare of land will need to be cleared to allow for the new lift, while existing cleared areas will also be used.
While he would not specify the exact price tag of the new lift, Gibson said it will cost “several million dollars.”
Two chairlift manufacturers, Leitner Poma and Doppelmayr CTEC, will bid on supplying the lift.
The Tranquilizer chair was installed in 1968 and has reached the end of its life. The kiefer T-bar was originally installed in 1964, but has had upgrades over the years.
Golder Associates Ltd., a Calgary-based environmental consulting firm, has prepared a draft report on environmental screening for the project.
The report argues in support of the project. It provides information about Marmot Basin, including a history of its lifts, and goes into detail about the project while discussing potential environmental impacts.
The report claims that the project will improve the safety and reliability of Marmot’s lifts, while benefiting skiers and local businesses. It also finds that the work will have low impact on wildlife in the area.
“The positive economic benefit provided to the community of Jasper will contribute to economic activity of other projects in Jasper National Park, which may result in an increase in winter visitor numbers,” the report says.
Parks Canada and Rocky Mountain Skiing Inc., owner of Marmot Basin, will be managing the project.
Lori Rissling Wynn, Parks Canada’s acting environmental assessment co-ordinator, said once public input is collected, clarification of concerns may be required before the project is approved. The lift project must complete the process as required under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
“It depends on how many comments we get and the scale and scope of the comments,” said Rissling Wynn.
Copies of the assessment may be viewed at the Jasper National Park administration office at 607 Connaught Dr., or by contacting the park superintendent’s office at 780-852-6171.
All comments should be provided in writing to superintendent Greg Fenton in writing by July 17.

I am guessing the Big Burn lift will become a "secondary lift" once the new Bliss chair is open and we will probably see limited operation of it maybe holidays or Saturdays.

Doubtful. For example, when Fanny Hill was replaced with Village Express, there became three unnecessary lifts: Coney Glade, Burlingame, and Sam's Knob. None of these lifts, however, have been put on back-up status, so I doubt that they would do that to Big Burn.

Just because terrain is accessible from one lift doesn't make another lift unnecessary. Village Express does not efficiently serve the terrain accessed by Sam's Knob or Coney Glade since it would force all skiers and riders to go to the base area every time to do so. Fanny Hill cannot handle the crowds that would come if those lifts were shuttered. I agree Burlingame is redundant since Village Express to mid-station is basically the same as the old Burlingame lift. It's my understanding that Burlingame will be removed in a couple of years.

There is no way that Big Burn will go secondary. If anything Sheer Bliss will still be secondary to Big Burn, but will very likely run daily the majority of the season (Christmas to close). Even after the upgrade of the Big Burn lift to HSQ in 1987, the Sheer Bliss ran daily for several more years. The only reason Sheer Bliss ran as a secondary lift in recent years was because of a lack of ridership because it was a slow, fixed-grip double.

I believe summer 2009 we will see a major refurbishment or replacement of the Big Burn lift. It's been mentioned several times and I know it is overdue. I'm just thankful that they didn't decide to replace both lifts with a HSS. The good share of the public is too stupid to handle the loading of a six-pack.

I fully agree! They will likely do something similar to what Bachelor did with Pine Martin chair a couple of years ago. Hopefully when Burlingame is removed, they might consider lengthening Coney Glade to begin where the bottom terminal of Burlingame is.

Not going to happen. Several condos are going to be built on the site of the lower loading station where Burlingame resides. Also, the alignment of the Coney Glade chair won't allow that to happen and it would interfere with the Village Express line if brought lower. It's also not necessary since the terrain that would benefit from lowering it is already served by the Village Express base to mid-station. Coney Glade serves a purpose by serving the east side terrain of the Sam's Knob pod and the new top-to-bottom terrain park with super pipe.

They originally intended to remove Coney Glade when the Village Express was installed, but there was a lot of opposition. so they changed their mind.

Coney Glade I suspect is going to need an overhaul since it is actually a year older (1986) than Big Burn.

Where is the info about the grouse installs? Sorry about my ignorance, I am travelling right now! If Courtesy quad has the same alignment as the current ropetow, that is going to be one short lift.

Plans are constantly changing and I'm sure a lot of what they do will be depending on customer traffic in the area. I wouldn't be surprised if they re-used the Keechelus on the backside of Hyak if they put the SilverFir on Rampart. I don't know for sure if they have the Rampart chair totally approved yet since it is a NEW install and the backside lift is a REPLACEMENT, already approved. I'd rather see the chair as the Creek Run chairlift myself, then the crossover would move to the upper mtn which would be very cool. Wait til' next year I guess.

BTW, who all bought a Triple-60 chair for $50? I got one!!

PTARMIGAN QUAD CHAIR REPLACEMENT AT LAKE LOUISE IS A GO....

This: from the July 24 Rocky Mountain Outlook

Construction on lift replacement set to go ahead at Lake Louise
Published: July 24, 2008 7:00 AM
Updated: July 24, 2008 7:55 AM AMANDA FOLLETT LAKE LOUISE

Construction is poised to go ahead on a replacement ski lift for Lake Louise as the public comment period closes on the resort's development permit today

(July 24), despite the ski area's long-range plan still being in the works.

Resorts of the Canadian Rockies said it would begin construction immediately to replace the fixed-grip Ptarmigan quad chair in exchange for a lift with identical capacity, but greater safety and less energy consumption.

"The lift is so old, but it's not the age so much, it's that the manufacturer doesn't exist anymore," said Matt Mosteller, senior director of business development for RCR, citing commitment to safety, environment and guest satisfaction as reasons for replacing the 20-year-old quad.

With replacement parts no longer available for the lift, he said that replacing it with a brand new Leitner-Poma chairlift would make guest experience safer and more functional. Although the new lift will have the same capacity, shuttling a comparable number of skiers up the mountain each day, it will also experience fewer breakdowns and delays, he said.

"That's the safety aspect of it - so we have a reliable lift that's safe for our guests," he said.

Mosteller added that replacing the bottom-drive lift with a top-drive lift would reduce energy consumption by about 30 per cent, equating to environmental benefits through increased efficiency.

RCR submitted its environmental assessment for the construction, which will involve use of heavy equipment, helicopters, all-terrain vehicles and trucks, to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency in May. The assessment was posted for public review on June 3 and garnered no response before the June 17 deadline for feedback.

The Advisory Development Board, a public panel of volunteers, reviewed the environmental assessment and accepted RCR's development application in a public meeting held June 26.

One Wednesday (July 23), one day prior to public feedback deadline, there had been no comments on the development permit, Mosteller said. Assuming no objections are registered, a building permit and construction agreement will be issued by Parks Canada and work will begin immediately.

Mosteller said the environmental assessment takes into account Lake Louise being one of the Banff National Park's key grizzly bear habitats and added that construction, which is expected to last until December, has been planned during late summer because most grizzlies move higher into the alpine at that time.

"Typically, bears like that area in the spring and early summer, then they move back to Skoki and beyond in the heat of the summer," Mosteller said. "That's the time when Parks Canada tells us is the best time to do construction."

He added that RCR's summer program does not take guided hikes on the slopes below the Ptarmigan in an effort to reduce human use impact and contain hiking to the mountain's front side. However, public access to Skoki Lodge makes its way through the Ptarmigan area.

Jim Pissot, executive director for Defenders of Wildlife Canada, sees the approval as a slippery slope for Parks Canada, as the ski resort has not submitted a long-range plan to the federal government.

"The ski hills in the mountain parks have gotten away with a long list of improvements and expansions in spite of the fact they have no submitted long-range plans," Pissot said, adding that the improvement could attract more visitors, which could lead to additional expansion requests in the future.

According to Tania Peters, Parks Canada's manager of media relations and executive services for Lake Louise, Yoho and Kootenay, the need for ski hill long-range planning was identified in 2000. However, she said the deadline for RCR to submit its LRP has come and gone, with no deadline currently in place.

According to the Ski Area Management Guidelines set out in December 2006 by Parks Canada, resorts cannot get permits for significant upgrades or changes until they have a long-term plan in place. However, like-for-like buildings and facilities, including chairlifts, can be replaced as long as the device and the location remain the same.

"It's something that's being worked on. We don't have (LRPs) yet and I don't think we're expecting them anytime soon," Peters said. "For something like the Ptarmigan Lift, it's pretty straightforward because it's a replacement."

Bow Valley Naturalists president Mike McIvor said because the replacement is allowed under current Parks Canada policy and guidelines, the organization will not oppose the construction.

"My understanding is the ski area has been doing its best to minimize the impacts and I expect that to happen through the construction period," he said.

The new Ptarmigan chairlift's expected lifespan is 25 years

Any news, updates or progress reports on Whistler Blackcomb's Peak to Peak? Just got Powder mag in the mail, big ad spread on the gondola, got the juices flowing. It boasts some records, but it says "for a lift of it's kind". What special traits does it have that's different than other gondola's, especially in Europe?

There are new pictures for August on the peak2peak website, but they mostly just show the installation of the skin onto the terminal (although there are a few that show the maintenance carrier on the line...). As far as records go, they mostly only apply to North America, as lifts like these are not uncommon in Europe, and we all know how much larger in scale some of the areas over there can be...
