L-P says on their blog that Snoqualmie is waiting for a permit while Snoqualmie says they are waiting to secure a lift from L-P.

someone should ask the contact at MBSNF in relation to Snoqualmie's permitting.

LAKE LOUISE PTARMIGAN QUAD UPDATE:

Another Yan bites the dust!

NOTICE OF COMMENCEMENT of an environmental assessment

Ptarmigan Chair Lift Removal and Replacement - Lake Louise (AB)

May 15, 2008 (Update) -- The Parks Canada Agency is required to ensure that a screening is conducted commencing on May 8, 2007 in relation to the project: Ptarmigan Chair Lift Removal and Replacement.

Resorts of the Canadian Rockies is proposing to replace the Ptarmigan Quad Chair Lift at the Lake Louise Mountain Resort with a new quad chair lift to ensure continued safety and reliability during winter operations. The replacement is required due to design and construction shortcomings, and a lack of long term parts and support for both the electrical and mechanical systems. The new lift will have the same capacity and follow the same alignment as the previous lift. Project activities involve manual labour, heavy equipment, helicopters, all terrain vehicles and trucks.

Under section 5 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, an environmental assessment is required in relation to this project because the Parks Canada Agency may issue a permit or license under subsection 5(1) of the National Parks Building Regulations.

That's not what I get when I read it again... What Parks Canada requires is an environmental assessment - SOP for any project inside a national park. RCR (Lake Louise's Parent Company) is the party that wants to replace the lift.

Snoqualmie already had a "go" for lift replacement for Siilver Fir and at Hyak for the Dinosaur lift. It could be contract negotiations that have not been finalized????.

I believe that minor realignment of both lifts (different than what's already approved) is requested in all proposed versions of the MDP, so I'd guess Snoqualmie is waiting on final approval before turning the first shovel of dirt. This probably isn't one of those cases where it's easer to ask forgiveness than permission...

New lift at Lutsen Mountains:

She’s been bypassed, ridiculed and essentially put out to pasture. Like any good woman who’s been ignored, this lady is packed up and ready to move on.

After years of under-utilization, Snowmass’ 27-year-old Naked Lady triple chair has been dissembled and sold to the Lutsen Mountains ski area in northern Minnesota. The lift towers were removed by helicopter last week during a period when the Sheer Bliss towers were also taken from the ground. The parts remain on the Slider run awaiting further instruction.

Next season, Snowmass will see a new high-speed Sheer Bliss replacement quad. The Naked Lady lift won’t be replaced, however, as it’s believed that the terrain is adequately served by the Alpine Springs chair.

“As soon as (Alpine Springs) went in, we shut that lift down and just used it for when we were busy, Christmas or President’s Weekend,” said Snowmass Mountain Manager Steve Sewell. “Even when the Alpine Springs line was out the maze, nobody would ride Naked Lady.”

If no one wanted to ride the old gal, at least someone was interested in buying the Riblet-made chair.

“We’ll definitely put it to good use,” said Tom Rider, one of Lutsen’s owners. Lutsen has a total vertical drop of about 800 feet; Rider said the lift (which is 1,125 linear feet in length) will have to be shortened.

But what hasn’t yet been determined is whether or not the Naked Lady name will stick at the new area.

“A lot of people here want to keep the name but we haven’t made a final decision,” Rider said, adding, that some believe, as with boats, it’s bad luck to change a lift’s name.

Founded in 1948 by a group that included Olympic bronze medalist Cindy Nelson’s father, George Nelson (a former 10th Mountain Division soldier), Lutsen sits on the shores of Lake Superior and offers plenty of advanced trails that’s spread out among four separate mountains. Next winter’s lift tickets will cost $65, which Rider said was “highest in the Midwest.” Annually, the resort sees about 100,000 skier and snowboarder visits.

The Naked Lady chair will be the resort’s eighth lift and will make it easier to access some steep chutes, Rider said.

Snowmass’ Sewell said he’s pleased that the lift was able to be brokered through the Mad River Lifts company. It’s motor remains in “great shape,” Sewell said, as is the machinery.

“You can count the number of times on one hand that the lift was run,” Sewell said, adding, “It’s nice to be able to recycle.”

Unfortunately, the old Sheer Bliss chair didn’t attract as much notice as its three-passenger compatriot across the mountain. “We though we had a buyer from Russia” but that fell through, Sewell said. Instead the lift parts will be cut down and sold as scrap in Denver.

Snowmass’ new Sheer Bliss lift, which will serve 2,100 passengers per hour, should be ready to go by Christmas, Sewell said.

Snowbasin's Littlecat Double is up for sale on Mad River Lifts  I stopped by Snowbasin on Friday in the evening to take a look at her. Chairs are off but it looks like they will be keeping the Terminals, towers, and haul rope in place for awhile yet. The new Littlecat Express will be going up
to the left of the old lift, will be a 2.5 min ride time, high speed quad, being built by Doppie in Canada. If the Basin can not sell the old lift, it will probably be scrapped, and I intend on getting one of the chairs, along with quite a few other interested folks, apparently.

I was sort of hoping to see that lift either get moved to serve the steeps at Ski Sunlight, CO or reinstalled to serve the Olympic bowl at Aspen Highlands but it is good someone is able to use it. That lift should have quite a bit more useful life in it since it was basically used for only 14 years out of its 27 year life.
About the new Sheer Bliss- Does anyone know if they are planning to move the bottom terminal down far enough so it can be reached from the top of the Elk Camp Gondola?? That would take quite a bit of traffic off Alpine Springs.

I think that they're only moving the upper terminal higher in order to reach the Cirque poma.

No and what would be the point? If you take the gondola then you should be going to ski the terrain on that side of the mountain. If you want to go to the Big Burn then you should take the Village Express, not the gondola.

The bottom terminal of the new Sheer Bliss will be basically in the same location, but on the other side of the trail it borders. The top terminal will be in an entirely new position higher up and much farther to the West. The top terminal will end basically in the same line as the Big Burn Quad, but higher up than it.

Thank you for the clarification. I think I have a better picture of where the lower terminal will be. The reason I brought up the bottom terminal possibly being accessed from the top of the gondoal is that I start at Two Creeks and like to access the terrain off the Bliss right away. I personally don't care for HSS chairs therefore avoid the Village Express since it usually stops and slows multiple times each time I have riden it or any other HSS. I need to remember I can access Coney Glade HSQ from the top of the gondola/ 2 Creeks so I will do that. It will be nice to have a faster ride up to those trails next season.

Basically, same location just the opposite side of the ski trail that parallels it.

Actually, you cannot access Coney Glade from the Gondola/Two Creeks. You have to ride Alpine Springs to get to Coney Glade. The base of Coney Glade is off the Green Cabin trail, not Adam's Avenue. I too start at Two Creeks every morning.

The issue with moving the station down to Adam's Avenue is that the midsection of Green Cabin and lower Coffee Pot would not be able to handle the skier traffic. It also would make the lift very undesirable for skiing since you'd have to ski this area that is already congested. That alignment would basically make it a lift for access purposes only, not repeat skiing.

Snowmass is a very large mountain and it is sort of unreasonable to expect that you could access any part from any where with only one lift ride. However, you can if you ski to the base. Village Express and Elk Camp Gondola basically make that possible. I agree with you about the six-pack. I cannot stand the queue set-up, the morons that use it or the side loading setup. I always use Coney Glade and now I'll use Sheer Bliss to get to the Burn from the east side, after riding Alpine Springs.

The new sheer bliss lift is going to put a lot more stress on the Poma. The Poma already has pretty long lines and a second lift will now feed it. Maybe they'll put in a second poma or a T bar. Putting a surface lift in from the top of high alpine would help too. Part of what makes the poma so cool is that it was hard to access and you could get away from everyone up there. I'm not so sure that will be the case anymore.
