If you read my above post, they are planning to put half the number of chairs, which means the same number of people and same capacity. The reason is supposedly that quad chairs are heavier and more stable in wind.

The room for unloading is a concern, they would have to do some grading to make space for it.

Snowmass Ski Area announced that they will replace the Sheer Bliss (Riblet Double) with a high-speed detachable quad this summer (2008).

The new HSQ will have a capacity of 2,000 pph, rise 2,212 vertical feet and have a ride time of just over 9 minutes. The new Sheer Bliss lift will be about 9,000 feet long.

The new lift will have a new alignment beginning from the same location, but ending above and to the west of the Cirque Poma. The new lift will provide direct access to the very top portion of Sneaky's and the entire Big Burn area.

This new lift will reduce the number of rides by one for repeat laps on the Cirque expert runs. It will also provide easier, high-speed access to the Big Burn from Alpine Springs and High Alpine and should reduce congestion in the most congested portion of the mountain, the Lower Green Cabin and Coffee Pot merge.

2 new surface lifts are going in Emigrant Basin at Kirkwood. They are called Covered Wagon and Lookout Vista and I presume will be Doppelmayr CTEC platters.

I wonder what other 'terrain enhancements' they're planning at PCMR. They say on the website that they're going to put in a new run this summer. This picture shows the old Ski Team chair to the right, and the line for the old Crescent lift, a Yan quad that was removed in 1997. The new Crescent lift - sad to see the Ski Team name go, but the actual ski team trains off of Eagle - will end at the same place as the original Crescent, it sounds like.

This will be a nice project. It is kind of a hassle having to drop down and ride Coney Glade and Big Burn to get back up to the Cirque runs and the expert terrain off Sheer Bliss. I have often wondered why they didn't just replace Sheer Bliss back in the late 80's instead of the Big Burn chair. Better late than never though. I'm not in favor of all high speed lift projects, however, this one will be nice.

It's a small one called the United States Ski Team. I guess you have to be pretty good to get it on it and it's not like your typical high school race team. I hear they even go to events like the Winter Olympics.

However, Mt. Bachelor is trying to convince the U.S. Ski Team to relocate or train there. I'm guessing during the spring/summer when Park City closes.

Mt. Bachelor closes at the end of May, although it has stayed open all the way until July 4th.

Of course, only the runs off the Summit Express would be viable.

Relocate: Not going to happen. New USST headquarters is just starting to be constructed at Quinns Junction (1 mile from PCMR). Winter School, PCMR Ski Team (feeder program to USST) and large donor base (Quicksilver, Rossignol, Marker, etc) are too entrenched in the PC area to make it feasible for a move.

Train: Yes, but Powdr Corp has to come to the plate and commit to summer lift coverage. Will require a subsidy on the part of USST.

SNOWMASS — Aspen Skiing Co. is celebrating a successful year by digging into its savings account to replace the ancient Sheer Bliss chairlift at Snowmass.

The Sheer Bliss fixed-grip double chair will be replaced with a high-speed detachable quad. That will significantly speed up the ride on the east side of the Big Burn.

The Skico brass hadn’t planned on a lift replacement this summer, but a favorable deal evolved through the chairlift manufacturing company Poma that was too good to pass up, according to Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle.

“Somebody ordered this lift and backed out of it,” Hanle said.

New chairlifts usually have to be ordered well ahead of when they are needed because of planning and manufacturing. But Poma officials approached the Skico recently about the availability of this chairlift. Details were nailed down when Skico officials traveled to Europe with Poma officials in March.

“The trip sealed the deal,” Hanle said.

He was uncertain if the $7 million price of the chairlift was a bargain rate.

The lift will be constructed this summer on a new alignment that will provide access to the entire Big Burn and Sheer Bliss areas of the mountain — nearly 700 acres of terrain in all, according to the Skico.

The new lift will nearly double the carrying capacity of the current Sheer Bliss double chair, built in 1975. The quad will carry 2,000 people per hour, compared to 1,010 on the current lift, according to the Skico. The new lift will offer a ride time of slightly more than nine minutes, carrying riders 2,212 vertical feet — 155 feet farther than the current chair, which had a ride time of 16 minutes.

The new upper terminal will be to the west side and above the bottom terminus of the Cirque lift, providing access to the Cirque lift as well as direct access to Sneaky’s run on the Big Burn.

“We have been looking at replacing the Sheer Bliss lift for sometime,” said Rich Burkley, Skico vice president mountain operations, in a press release. “It seems that sometime has finally arrived. This new lift will open up the midmountain and give people increased access to the Big Burn from either side of the mountain.”

The Skico also is constructing a new restaurant at the top of Sam’s Knob this summer. In all, the company is spending more than $16 million in on-mountain improvements before next winter at Snowmass.

Closing day for Snowmass, as well as Aspen Mountain, was Sunday.

Hold on a second here... If I understand what's being said, they're getting a new HSQ from Poma France, paying $7 million for it and calling it a good deal?? What were they smoking??!!

$7 million for the lift sounds about right to me. You have to consider that the lift will have a line length of 7000+ ft, it won't be running the exact same line as the previous lift so more permits will have to be purchased and the US dollar sucks right now too.

Will the lift be a European design? It sounded in the article like Skico people were just on a schmoozing trip with LP of America over in Europe when they sealed the deal. Still, $7 million seems really high for a new high speed quad

I wouldn't take that $7 million figure as fact. If they are buying the lift from Poma Europe then the exchange rate is going to work against them.

If there is a special deal then it may come down the road. You help us by buying this canceled order right now and next year we'll sell you one at a discount. That gives the manufacturer some time to plan for that discounted deal.

There also may be no discount. The instant availability of the lift may have been the appeal. The ASC wasn't planning for the lift, but once it was too late to order for a 2008 installation maybe they wish they had.

Maybe they're just helping Poma out to keep a solid business relationship.

Also, how much does a new HSQ cost these days for the lift and installation?
