They are calling 4 natural snow on friday here in rutland the temps have been cold enough most nights to blow a lot of snow especially on the upper elevations. At Mt. Snow on Saturday there was a dusting of natural at the top but you couldn't ski anything on just natural snow.

Here in Saskatchewan we are still above freezing temps. No natural, anything that has come is gone within a day or so. Maybe by the end of next week we might get some snowmaking in, supposed to drop to about -15 celsius, finally.

Looks like it might start this weekend until tuesday at least. Could this be the first snow that will stay?

Spring Dipper was our first run opened on the 2nd. There is good coverage on it and even a few terrain park features on the top half. There is almost full cover with only a few spots that are marked off. Looks like we will be getting some snow Monday through Thursday this week so hopefuly we get some descent coverage from it as most of our runs, where snow hasn't been blown, only have 2-4 inches on them and thats only above 10,000 feet. At least it's still early and we have better weather to get the things done we are normaly struggling to get done this time of year.

HA! After spending two winters in Breck, I can't believe it looks like that now. I hope they have more snow. Here in Northern NH we got about 6 inches yesterday! Can't wait to climb into the ol' BR-350.

Looks like this was a good year to bring the "ski free" deal back at Crested Butte!

Could Crested Butte even be making money with one run open?

They have planned since June to have completely free skiing until December 15th.

I have had a few discussions with mountain managers from other resorts, although much smaller areas regarding this very idea. By using the free skiing model for end and beginning of the season marketing, they have actualy found in many cases that the revenue from lodging, food, retail and other outlets far exceeds what it did for all revenue streams when even $5 lift tickets were offered. So to answer your question yes they do make money although it depends by the area of course as to how much or if it is more or less than they would with lift ticket sales.

It seems to me that the Muellers are attempting to bring back some of CB's past. I went to CB for the first time last year and I had a fantastic stay. Being from the north east and growing up with average base depths of 24 to 48 inches (mainly man made), I didn't want to get back on the plane, yet the local folk consistently stated that it was a terrible year. As to whether or not the free skiing deal will attract folks outside of the Southwest market, I believe, may be a far stretch. I think that the management did it for nostalgia purposes only. I do not believe that any of CB's sister areas, Sunapee and Okemo, offer the free skiing promotion. Both would be considered smaller areas in comparision to CB.

Not a great year out here in the Northeast. Warm and wet through the holidays with no real storms to talk about. Best day skiing was in March after an 10 inch dump on manmade base. Been watching the weather out your way, nothing spectacular yet. Like I say, THINK SNOW.
