The only chopper available may not be able to lift the combined load of crossarms, assemblies and tubes. They had to do that here for the tower that had two 12ers hanging off it.

Crystal Update: As soon as I got home, I saw an article on the front page of the Seattle paper about the towers being flown tomorrow!

Does anyone know what these 4 cables are? There is the big red one, which contains three copper cables and then a skinny black copper one and 2 pvc pipes.

Just got word that they are flying the towers at Crystal starting at 9am tomorrow, I'm going to skip school to go watch.

The foam keeps the mortar under the flange when you pack it in under the tower base, the four nuts and washers are to level the tower vs. using shims.

Actually, Skier is documenting the installation of the new lift at Crystal for a senior project, so it's not that bad.

I had an awesome time, the project manager let me go with them instead of watching from afar. I was literally 20 feet away from the action. Expect some awesome photos tonight.

So I got a ride up the mountain with the marketing director, director of mountain ops, and reporters from TV and newspapers. The top three towers were done really fast, the 23 year old pilot was amazing. I worked my way down the line as they did all 42 trips. If anyone wants pictures of anything specific, I probably took some of it.

It was really one of the coolest things I have ever watched. If you have never seen this done, you should try and watch it sometime somewhere.

And the spider excavator that flipped in August is still flipped on a cliff and probably will not be moved until next spring. It is visible in one of the pictures I posted.

Also, the Chinook helicopter that was supposed to come stood them up three times in a row so so they opted for a smaller heli and more trips.

The Forest Service wanted the towers to be green but I think they just ran out of time to paint them. The haul rope and comm lines are being installed this week, the splicer is coming Nov. 22 and the load test is scheduled for the first week in December. Grand opening is Dec. 8!

Phoenix: It was for my "culminating project," which is a graduation requirement in Washington State for high school seniors. Minimum 80 hrs. of work on pretty much whatever you want. So I chose something I would enjoy that wouldn't feel like work at all.

SkiBachelor: Yes, it was Brian Jorgensen of Timberline Helicopters. Everyone was raving about his flying skills. The coolest part was when he was done with a tower on Northway Peak he would turn around and dive sharply back to the base area.
