Well at least the towers are here now. Good luck flying them in!

I believe the hold up was in getting them from Doppelmayr. All the foundations were done at least a month ago. They were just assembling them today. By the way, they are flying them with the crossarms on so they are getting a Chinook dual rotored helicopter.

....most helicopters have windshield wipers like your car.
The view from above is always better looking down than the view from the ground looking up! :smile:

I do have to say, that early October is kind of late for pouring a foundation and installing the top terminal.

I went up to mad river glen yesterday and they are still waiting for the last 2 towers to be erected. I didn't have a camera so I stole this off their website. They revamped their photo gallery on the site if anyone wants to look at all their pics.

They also ran the comm line up yesterday.

Good movie. Can anyone draw a line on the trail map to show what road they used? Skier, if it snows just take your skis... Wishful thinking.

It is the main road up to the top of the area. It is very steep in sections, I am glad they got this up before the snow hit.

Unless they've done some work to it, most of the mountain road sucks. I wouldn't be surprised if the concrete truck had to have an assist going up.

North Back should be closed until construction is finished- too many ways for the public to get hurt.
Towers are in the parking lot and should be flown starting sometime next week.
Power is already out there- it went in this spring. I'm not sure how the bottom terminal will be powered, especially since it's the tension terminal and from the pics I've seen it's hydraulic. Perhaps it's a passive system like old Midway's was- occasionally we'd have to give it a few pumps by hand but there was no constantly-operating electric pump.

They could also use a 24v motor for the hydraulic pump and use batteries for power.

That sounds like a pain to do. Then don't you have dead batteries after awhile. They should just have a diesel powered lift.

In a detachable the batteries are kept charged by an alternator driven by the tire conveyor, I've not seen a comparable system for a fixed grip but it seems possible to me. I could be wrong but wasn't Liftmech talking about the return terminal, so diesel power wouldn't make a difference?

Couldn't they just run power down the line? I have seen sewer, water, and power run down the line of a lift in Colorado.

Maybe it's different in the states but this is from Canadian code:
Only signal, communication, control, and safety circuits of 48 V (nominal) or less shall be carried
between towers that support the ropeway.

Nothing to do with your question, but I know if I didn't post it someone would say I've seen lights on towers..

Ropeway towers and stations may be used for supporting lights subject to the following requirements:
(a) written approval of an engineer shall be obtained;
(b) service conductors shall be provided with mechanical protection or in rigid conduits;
© wiring to service lighting on towers shall be buried;
(d) a separate enclosed circuit breaker disconnect shall be provided at each tower and station;
(e) all metallic raceways on a tower or station shall be grounded;
(f) ground fault protection shall be provided; and
(g) the lighting installation shall not conflict with other requirements of this Standard and shall not
interfere with operation of the ropeway in any manner.

At Snoqualmie they have lines going all over the place. There is a pipe below the Central Express but also wires above from tower to tower. Why they have two sets I'm not sure.

Snoqualmie Guy, the lines you are referring to are likely just for communication, not power.

They're still comlines. I'd have to look up the exact part, but I believe ANSI prohibits anything higher than 50V overhead. Some lifts have more than one comline. They range from 6-pair all the way up to 200, so an older lift that needs more pairs just adds one or more. The Flyer, for example, has two overhead and one underground because the original 25-pair is down to half or less of its original wires.

Back on topic- it occurred to me that one could run an alternator off the return bullwheel. I've seen it done at Stevens Pass on the Southern Cross; I'm not sure what it's for since the lift is counterweighted but it would charge batteries for an intermittent system.

Poma flew towers and xarms for the chair lift at Revelstoke yesterday...6 ft. of snow at the top of the lift...the crew was able to ski the entire line... one of the guys wore a helmet cam and is putting a short video together.
Nothing is so perfectly amusing as a total change of ideas.
