New lift construction photos

floridaskier's Photo floridaskier 23 Oct 2006

Are those six pack terminals on Peruvian? They look wider than other quad ones. Also, it looks like the bottom terminal is a lot longer than the top (just from counting the windows, 17 to 14). Maybe that's for extra tension carriage travel on a long lift

There doesn't seem to be a lot of space at the top of the new Peruvian lift for lining up to get on the carpet through the tunnel. Are they planning on more space for that?

I don't know what exactly the capacity of a carpet is, but the lift is only going to be 1800 per hour and not everyone will be headed for Mineral Basin. Also the top terminal has no drive or tensioning in it, so it can be small because of it is a bottom tension/top vault drive.

Wally, that's cool that Powder Mountain allowed you to talk up and take pictures of the splice.

Looks like the Assay Hill quad at Snowmass is made up from parts of the former Fanny Hill HSQ rather than being an entire new lift.

(It is a flash photo galley, but there are a few photos of the Easy Rider Quad, which appears to be used from that sightseeing lift that failed in Moab, Utah)

I just noticed that a new quad is going in at Asessippi Winter Park in Canada. It must be used.

And why not? Since Fanny Hill was one of those 'upgradeable' fixed quads, it stands to reason. It seems from the photos that the only new things on the lift were hanger arms and grips. I imagine Snowmass upgraded the controls and drive as well, but one can't tell from a photo.

The actual fanny hill alpha drive terminal was used to shorten and upgrade the burlingame lift. So assay hill will likely have all new terminals.

The peak 8 terminal of Brecks gondola has the outer terminal skins and is awaiting the bullwheel and other asemblies. The loading/unloading platform for the peak 8 station is also comming allong nicely. The com line also has been run from top to bottom. I will have pictures of all of it tomorrow.

Why is it up on that platform? Will it be a vault drive?

The drawings that I have seen for the new hotel and base development show it as having a plaza at the level of the loading of the lifts where the gondola unloads at the base and a parking garage underneith so that is my assumption of the design. I couldnt tell if it will be vault or not.

The New East River High Speed Quad Gets Ready to Rip!

Today's second shot is of the top (drive) terminal on the new East River Lift. The lift line terminals and towers are just about ready to go (if the finishing touches aren't yet complete, they're probably being taken care of as you read this), while the grips and chairs will be assembled this weekend for a Monday load test. The lift is deemed ready to transport the public when the load test is complete, so you can imagine that both the CBMR lift maintenance guys and the Poma crew members are working some big hours to button this project up by the end of the weekend.

The pallets in this photo are loaded with the detachable grips that will be mounted atop the chairs and then hung on the haul rope over the next couple of days. You can see the huge springs that generate the force necessary for the grip to clamp on to the haul rope for the carrier's travel up and down the lift line. Those white wheels allow the grip (and chair/carrier) to roll through the terminal when the grip has released from the haul rope. Cool mechanical stuff, and we're wishing the new lift good luck for Monday's load test!

Friday's third shot is of Nathan, a Poma electrician from New Zealand. He's been brought in to help get the new East River Lift squared away. What a view from his office, huh? That's Double Top Mountain in the background.

After being stuck in Snowmass helping out with a project there, Nathan sounded stoked to be in a town that actually has some "ski town" character. Imagine that--a ski town that looks like a ski town, not a suburb. Nathan's been away from home, working seven days a week for a while now (I believe he lives permanently in New Zealand . . . Poma brought him to Colorado via a project in London, so he's been on the road with his tool bag for a bit), but he mentioned wanting to ride CB before heading back down under for their summer. He thinks Crested Butte looks like a sweet mountain and cool town. He's obviously a sharp guy . . .

Thank you for all the help with the lift, Nathan--safe travels home when your adventure's over.

Nice- Marketing can't resist putting the company tagline in a writeup about a new lift.

I was up there last week and the Poma guy I talked to said that there would be a bridge going to the slope just to the skier's right of the Colorado. I was there again today, and lo and behold there was the bridge. I will take some pics in the next couple of days. Also, it looked like there was a cable sitting at Shock Hill right below where the terminal there will be.

That bridge is for the short term, I was referencing mre of long term plans and the reason that it was constructed off of ground level. I have pics to post tonight.

Here are more pictures of the East River lift at Crested Butte. It looks to be almost complete. Mountaian Resort Magazine and Leitner-Poma have done a great job posting pictures of each of their installations. Hopefully Doppelmayr will do the same in future years.
