Winter is coming! Snow has fallen already in Colorado, and here in Washington, the snow level is dropping to 5000 feet tomorrow. Loveland should start snowmaking any day now. Hopefully the farmer's almanac is right, as they are predicting a cold and snowy winter for the west.

Technically speaking, we have had snow in NH already. I work on Mt. Washington, the highest point in the NE, and we have had trace snow, as well as rime ice a couple of times already.

Any 200 mph gusts yet?

Is the cog railway still in operation? Do they still collect the tickets on Jacob's Ladder?

No, they haven't had a single 200 mph gust since. 182 is the highest. I saw 137 last year. The cog is still kicking. They run the ski train in the winter up to about Waumbek tank, but I'm afraid I'm not sure what you mean about collecting tickets on Jacob's Ladder.

I can quote all those figures pretty easily. Jacob's is 37 degrees. The front of the coach is 14 feet higher than the back. But this is all off topic.

I checked - it was 231 mph on 12 APR 34. Highest surface wind ever recorded!

Jacob's ladder is a nickname for a steep section of track near the top of the railroad. The support structure there looks like a ladder and I believe that the workman primarily responsible for its construction was named Jacob.

When I was there, the train conductor would walk down the car's isle while the train was on the ladder and collect tickets. As he walked, he was at about a 45 deg. angle to the floor.

Here's a good site in the cog railway and Mt. Washington in general:

Bad news for the Pacific Northwest...

Camp Springs, MD - Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Climate Prediction Center reported today that El Niņo conditions have developed in the tropical Pacific and are likely to continue into early 2007. Ocean temperatures increased remarkably in the equatorial Pacific during the last two weeks. "Currently, weak El Niņo conditions exist, but there is a potential for this event to strengthen into a moderate event by winter," said Vernon Kousky, NOAA's lead El Niņo forecaster. Typical El Niņo effects are likely to develop over North America during the upcoming ski and snowboard season. Those include warmer-than-average temperatures over western and central Canada, and over the western and northern United States. Drier-than-average conditions can be expected in the Ohio Valley and the Pacific Northwest, while above-average snowfall is forecast for parts of the Southwestern U.S.

El Niņo usually dumps a bunch of snow on us, we're far enough inland that it stays cold enough plus we're in Canada, so that should help :) Snow @ 6800 ft today!

Looks like Calgary is in for the White stuff this evening. We might get some spratically over the next day, currently it's just a touch too warm for snow. It's only sept 15, i'm really excited, it hasn't snowed this early in a long time.
