I'm going to guess that due to the high winds at the upper part of the mountain that the bottom terminal has the ability to park carriers inside it. However, it also could be that the lift is both bottom drive and tensioned.

I would guess that the bottom has a long terminal while the to is top his getting the short terminal with the power plant needed for the lift the vault drive became necessary due to space concerns in the smaller terminal. The longer bottom terminal helps if the lift goes over terrain where it can be difficult getting the rope to just the right length. The short top terminal may be because of where the lift is landing i.e. no room for anything bigger
B.T.W if you look at construction photos and compare Snowbird's uni-gs to Belleayer's or DV's you can see the extra section added to the runway beam and the longer conveyor assembly

/I think they look good compared to galvanized....
they're just painted...I don't see how it qualifies as "over the top"
Also, I haven't seen much rust around our towers/crossarms/catwalks
And I looked at the picture of that splice a little closer and it looks like Richard Ryer

Ian from SMI is doing the demo of this lift and so far he's done a pretty stand up job! Really cool guy to work with as well

Seeing that sign confuses a lot of people. When we were up there last weekend, many people didn't understand why the lift line ran north when town is downhill to the east. Much hilarity ensued listening to people try and explain the angle stations.
