Later this week some bigwigs from Breck are going to Grand Junction to check out cabin styles: CWA and I'm not sure of the other one. The Gondola will have four terminals, one at the Transfer Station in Breck, one at Shock Hill, one at Peak 7, and one at Peak 8. They've already started clearing for the new Peak 7 Base Area. I've heard rumors too about placing the bottom terminals of the Independence, Colorado, and Rocky Mt. chairs on the same grade.

Garth

the bottome terminal of Independence will be moved at some point...not this summer, though. The road below independance will be moved this summer in preperation for the master plan.

Is anybody aware of what the masterplan is? I read something on vailresorts.com about developing the base of peak seven and redesigning the base of peak eight. This is all I know. Please, if you have other info tell me.

I will try to scan in the Master Plan that they sent to us as Peak 8 homeowners. They have drawn up and changed alot but the current long term plan, in adition to the gondola, calls for condos at the base of peak 7, condos arround the base and on Trigvees run, and ultimately a grand hotel in the current pay parking lots that are at the base of Peak 8.

If I read the press release correctly than this gondola looks like it will have two turns in it? It would be interesting to see a map with the planned path.

That is really cool. Are they going to charge for lift tickets at the parking lots?

From what they are hinting at the gondola will be free, similar to Tellurides. Thus the ticket offices will remain at the base but you never know. Also under this plan the free parking would become pay parking sometime down the road.

I think that would be a total rip off.

In Breckenridge parking is at a premium and even before this gondola was definate the city was talking about making all parking pay parking, similar to Aspen.

Well if the gondola is going to be free to ride, there has to be some way to help pay for the operation of it and charging for parking is the best way. Why should the Breckenridge tax payers pay for it when they won't be using it as much as the daily skiers?

When I was at Zermatt, I had to pay for a parking spot and then a train ticket up to the resort.

Quite a bit of the tax the city collects is from the people who will ride the lift...The sales tax from the hotels, restrauants, and shops are from the daily skiers so I'm not against the town using taxes to help pay for the gondola.

Will the gondi be under your department's care, Mike, or will it be a separate entity similar to Telluride's?

I also am not against the use of taxes since I will be riding the gondola fairly often into town since it picks up very close to my house and its such a pain to park in Breck.

I dont know if the decision has been made between 8 and 12 pax cabins as there was some debate over which it will be. Also I haven't seen any decision on what cabin they will use but they used a picture of Vail's gondola for the article in the Summit Daily.

Well in that case they will probably have a gondola similar to the one at JH, same design as Vail's but only 8 passenger

It's a much cooler experience to ride it. Especially when the wind is blowing 50 mph right into your face!

Been there, done that and I don't want to do that again. When I was younger, my dad and I were dumb enough to ride the Summit Express at Mt. Bachelor hoping to get first tracks. Man, what a bad idea since it was windy as hell, whiteout and getting hit with ice pellets. Instead of the lift running at its normal speed, it was going slower than a fix grip lift and took like 20 minutes to get to the top. Mt. Bachelor no longer runs the Summit Express in those kinds of conditions but it was kind of a unique experience when it was and having to fallow neon markers on the side of the runs so you wouldn't get lost.
