Looks like they will be starting the tram this summer and installing the new Northway lift. Good news, this summer they have stated they will run the lifts for scenic rides (which will make it a hell of a lot easier to go snap shots of the construction) :)

On the mammoth forum there are rumors of replacing chair 5 with a high speed quad. Chances are this will be after 9 is upgraded, so maybe summer of 07.

Yes, Chair 5 is the next lift to become a high speed quad after Chair 9.

I am pretty sure that northway is going in in Summer 2007 and the tram and summit house will go in then too.

From the New for 05-06 page:

"The trails were flagged and reviewed by the US Forest Service for the Northway lift in the Northback country. The installation of this new lift is scheduled to take place the summer of 2007."

on the MDP update page:

"This project had been deferred until recently when we found a contractor who was able to get the project costs back down to the original price. This will be a two-year project starting the Spring of 2007. The plan is to install the jig-back 100 passenger tram, from the grocery store location to the top terminal of Rainier Express. It will have only two intermediate towers; one on Exterminator and the other near Iceberg Ridge. We are also looking into the possibility of designing and constructing a new summit restaurant at the same time. "

It is good news that they are starting up summer operations again, they haven't been open for summer since 2000.

It goes from a development up to the Temptation run off of King Con. The top terminal is already there

I was in a meeting the other day and it is pretty much a sure thing that Deer Valleys (Z-POD) Lift that will be close to our existing Empire lift will NOT be built this summer and probably be built in 2007. It might be built with acess to Main Street but that hasn't been decided yet. I think a lot of it has to do with the real estate deals around the area too.

It's about time they brought that back. I understand there is less time for maintenance (been there, still doing that) but it's definitely a money-maker. I was summer lift lead for several years and there were days when every chair was full. That's not bad for summer ops.

dont quote me on this, but crested butte could possibly build a lift OUT of teocalli bowl. the possibility was toyed with in their five year plan, but there has been no official word or plans set forward. the possibility of it happening comes from the fact they tore out the old t-bar at the bottom for the new West Wall Quad, and with how popular cb has been lately, the money and interest, and more importantly, the spare (and most ideal) lift is definetly there. so.....we'll see. it didnt take them long to get new lifts isntalled inside the permit boundary (west wall, prospect), so hopefully this one wouldnt hopefully be either. again, speculation. theres also a small amount of speculation of fourth bowl and teo two being added to the permit area and ski area. locals will kill me for saying this, but the backcountry down to brush creek th is some of the best around.

however, a couple years down the road, the new owners do want to go ahead with the fabled and infamous Snodgrass Expansion- only in their own words, "Snodgrass Lite". the plan calls for a small expansion (3 lifts on snodgrass with one connecting lift (possibly gondola...? coughgoldlinkgondolacough.....the rumours are talking...) to the mountain. two on the S/SE side of snodgrass (lower parts of the mountain are sun baked, would require lots of snowmaking), and a lift on the west side that would provide access to the Meridian Lakes subdivison/Washington Gulch area. Most of this terrain would be beginner/intermediate terrain with a few steeper trails, but it will obviously be an area for people to head who aren't quite up to crested butte's level of terrain, and get away from the bro brah crowd.

This plan has been met with somewhat receptive arms of most locals, mostly because the new plans dont call for lifts on the NE shoulder of the mountain (Morning Glory Bowl area...), which A) is very popular with the backcountry crowd) and B) would have disturbed the RMBL's avalanche study area around Gothic. Previous plans had called for up to 12 lifts and a whole array of lodges and such, and that plan was most definetly not dug by the local crowd. the ruling from the forest service is not expected (according to the FS website) until summer 2008, so it wont start until 2009 if thats the case. but this new snodgrass lite probably will happen. as much as the crusty old timers dont think so, its the only way for crested butte to go....just look at this thread. expansion is the "thing" these days, and i think Tim and Diane Mueller realize that. So we'll see. im keeping my fingers crossed for a Teo Lift.

Today, Breckenridge Ski Resort and the Town of Breckenridge announced that construction on the much-anticipated Breckenridge gondola will start this spring. The new gondola will start from the Breckenridge Transportation Center located in the parking lot right off historic Main Street and have terminals at both Peak 7 and Peak 8, providing an integral link for skiers, riders and visitors from town to the ski resort base areas. It will allow the ski resort and the Town to upgrade the skier experience and improve the overall experience by reducing the number of people that need to be bussed to the mountain. In addition to stops at the base areas, the new gondola will include a mid-station at Shock Hill. Setting the stage for the planned developments on Peak 7 and 8, the 8-passenger gondola is expected to be completed by Christmas 2006.

“The gondola has been talked about in the community for 20 years and now the timing is perfect as this project will continue the incredible momentum that Breckenridge Ski Resort and the Town of Breckenridge have worked together to build from the success of the Imperial Express, the popularity of the Skyway Skiway and a strong real estate and development market,” said Roger McCarthy, co-president of the mountain division for Vail Resorts and chief operating officer of Breckenridge and Keystone.

In May 2002, the Town of Breckenridge and Breckenridge Ski Resort signed a landmark agreement outlining a development plan for Peaks 7 and 8 designed to maintain both the resort town’s world-class stature and quality of life. As a part of this plan, the Mountain Thunder Lodge and Townhome project and the Skyway Skiway have been completed in the past year ahead of schedule. The gondola represents one of the last major steps in implementing the development plan and the transportation framework as well as the continued relationship between the Town and the resort.

As part of the agreement, the Town of Breckenridge has committed to a contribution of $6.7 million toward the completion of the gondola. For its part, the ski resort has guaranteed parking at the gondola base, transferred

density from the parking lots to the Peak 7 and 8 base, sunset density consistent with the Upper Blue Master Plan and reduced commercial density at the Peak 7 and 8 future bases. The ski resort also has obtained virtually all necessary approvals to build the gondola and buildings associated with the project. In addition to the monetary commitment from the Town of Breckenridge, the Breckenridge Land Company (the developers of Shock Hill) is contributing $500,000 to the gondola project and the necessary easements to complete the gondola.

The mayor of Breckenridge, Ernie Blake, said, “The Town of Breckenridge is thrilled with the ski area’s decision. We recognize that Vail Resorts has many choices for its investment dollars and appreciate the confidence it has shown in Breckenridge with this commitment. It comes years ahead of the agreed upon schedule and is another example of what a model public/private partnership can produce. We are fortunate to be economically capable of contributing to this wonderful amenity upgrade for our guest.”

The Breckenridge gondola will be one of the most modern gondolas in North America with seating for 8 and room for ski and ride gear inside. Right now, the ski resort plans to operate the gondola in both the winter and summer seasons. It will have a ride time of approximately seven and a half minutes from the transportation center to the base of Peak 8 and will be able to carry 3,000 people per hour.

According to an approximate measure that I got with a GPS unit the vertical for the Breck gondola from town to the peak 8 base where the terminal is proposed is 393ft. So it seems that vertical measure is correct.
