Ski Area Report Card Released

SAM Magazine--December 4, 2003--The Ski Area Citizen's Coalition has released its annual environmental report card for ski resorts in the West. The environmental group grades areas on energy usage, resort expansions, wildlife protection, water conservation and more. The criteria do not allow for any expansions in buildings, terrain, snowmaking, parking lots, etc.

Regionally, California/Nevada came in with an average score of 63.1, which rates a B. Oregon/Washington was second with 59.2 (a C); Colorado/New Mexico was also a C with 59.1 points; Utah weighed in with 55.7 points (also a C) and Idaho/Montana/Wyoming had the worst score with 51.6 points (a C).

On a resort basis (76 were given report cards), Aspen, Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands, Alpine Meadows, Sundance, Wolf Creek, Taos, Eldora, Sierra Summit and Stevens Pass all received A's. At the bottom end of the class with F's were: Vail, Breckenridge, Copper, Big Mountain, Big Sky, Snowbasin, Beaver Creek, Silver Mountain, Crested Butte and Grand Targhee.

Oops- we failed! I guess I'll have to stop dumping solvent out the door when it gets old. Seriously- I wonder what criteria they use when judging? I'm not saying we're great, but I haven't seen anything since I've been at the resort that would justify an F... We are forbidden from working in Copper Bowl (our 'Back Bowls') from 15 May to 15 July to protect the elk back there, and we abide by that ruling to the letter, for instance.

I find it funny that they have reversed the trend with Heavenly...

It went from a D last year to a C this year.

Here's the reporting folks' web page.
Just keep in mind that this is very much a "no growth or development can be good, in fact ALL human activity is inherently evil and everyone but ME should just go away" group and so any expansions gets a black mark.

I wonder what Deer Valley is. I'm not surprised that Sundance got an A either
