Hi all;

I'm really glad to have found this site, damaging as it has been to my productivity at work. I've been fascinated by ski lifts pretty much since I learned to ski at age 4.

Now for some actual content: What ski areas out there have lifts that cross, and why?

The one I'm familiar with is Sugarloaf, where two condo access lifts cross each other at a common tower below the base lodge. This was done so they could pass between the base lodge and adjacent buildings and end just above it, and provide access from condos and an inn further down.

Sunapee used to have two crossing lifts, but they realigned them in the early 80s.

The Porcupine triple and Needles gondola at Snowbasin, UT cross. There's no shared tower though

The Mammoth Panorama gondola crosses over a high speed quad (which one, anyone?) with one shared tower.

Park City in Utah has the Town triple passing over the Payday six pack. Before, the old gondola crossed over three lifts: Payday triple, Ski Team double, and Crescent triple (Ski Team is the only one of those still there, and it was shortened)

There's some more too, I can't remember them though

Jackson Hole used to have two chairlifts that crossed: Crystal Springs and Teewinot, I believe.

No, Porky doesn't share a tower with the gondola:

Lower Panorama crosses thunderbound (6)

Squaw has High Camp go under the Funitel and Newport under Siberia Express. They also have Far East Express go over Red Dog.

Mt Baker's chairs 1 and 2 cross and share a tower. Copper's American Flyer used to pass over old G-lift; G was removed in '99 so no more. As for why- at Baker the profile of chair 1 pretty much ensures that no matter what alignment chair 2 has, it will always cross. I don't know why the Flyer and G crossed, although I suspect it was to avoid congestion at the base area.

The Peak 8 SuperConnect at Breckenridge passes over the Beaver Run Superchair and the C-lift.

At Mammoth The lower section of Panorama Gondola passes over Thunderbound Ex. ( ch# 6) and share a tower. Then it passes over Stump Alley EX. (ch. # 2). The derail system for the Panorama Gondola is tied into the derail system of Ch# 2 & 6.

I was suprised that the cross of coonskin and the gondola is arranged the way that it is. I would have thought the gondola would pass over coonskin but it goes under it.

Squaw's funitel also goes over the broken arrow lift, which I have not once seen open. I'm kinda curious about the skiing it serves.

Steamboat's gondola crosses the Southface chair.

And until one was removed and one was replaced, Heavenly's Ridge Chair and Canyon Chair (the triple, not current HSQ) shared a tower.

Edit: Spelling checker "corrected" HSQ

Whistler - Village Gondola crosses Fitzsimmons Chair
Blackcomb - Excalibur gondola crosses Wizard chair.
No common towers on either. See the Doppelmayr 2004 Worldbook for a picture of a common tower with a major canopy over the bottom lift.
