Friendly Giant to be removed...

Well it last ran in spring of 98, so thats not that bad.

Here they are, just looks dusty, and the doors are off. They probably didnt kill them knowing they were trying to sell it.

So the towers andeverything else are just sitting next to the funitel at squaw?

I don't actually know where the towers and lower terminal stuff is. I know the just cut off at least 5 towers, so I dont know what they will do with those, but otherwise its a mystery, but is probably up the road you can't drive/walk up because of a gate.

This is a bad new because this was the last Yan high-speed quad ( built in 1989 if i'm not mistaken) :help: I hope it will still run before it goes to scrap :censored:

They have already probably started with the chairs, and is the haul rope on there or not?

Actually you would be amazed to see how fast this thing can be gone. We are just used to lifts being removed early in the season to be replaced by a new type of lift. But since there isn't going to be a lift that is going to be replacing this one, LL can work more slowly on removing it.

They still need approval from the Parks department to allow the gondola installation using the modified liftline they requested - response pending in about two weeks. If they don't get it, they say that 'ol Friendly will just sit there unnused for next season. Personally, I think LL is bluffing and will spend whatever money is necessary to bring it up to code for one more season if need be.

Pure speculation, of course, but they NEED two high speed lifts at the base to handle uphill skier distribution especially during weekends. One quad and the old Murray Latta double just can't handle it. If they had just requested a direct replacement for the Friendly Giant along the exact same liftline I think it would have been a 'rubber stamp' situation. Instead, they decided to go for a modified route and gondola which I think is causing the delays.

A question out there to those who may know.., In one recent newspaper account LL says they have spent $1 million (Cdn) in maintenance over the past three years to keep 'Friendly' up and running. There is no comparison provided for, say, over the past ten years, but would this be an untoward amount for a (now) 15 year-old high speed lift? Just wonderin'....

I thought they stoped using the Friendly Giant last winter.
They're still using the M-latta double instead of the Friendly Giant?

The Olympic double goes higher than the friendly giant. Olympic double brings you at the summit platter and the friendly giant & glacier to the top of the world.

I think, during weekdays, they need only 1 high-speed lift at the bottom of the mountain

We spend around $500,000 (US) per summer on maintenance for 23 lifts, including my 18-year old detachable. Unless you run into unanticipated problems, I don't think $750,000 US for three years' worth of maintenance on one lift is accurate. I wonder how many unanticipated problems (broken welds, carrier repair, tower alignment in the shop, severe sheave wear, et cetera) LL has had on that lift? I've found several problems on the Flyer this summer, but they don't begin to come near the numbers quoted by LL.
