"a Shrinking Heavenly"

Back on the topic of Heavenly...

The Wells Fargo area that was removed appears to be very large indeed. Check out aerial images.

Which site did you use to check it out?

Wells Fargo... Check it out...

You can see the bottom of Galaxy and the whole length of the Stagecoach Express.

I'm not sure the line visible on the aerial was the lift line. I seem to remember it going up to where Galaxy starts (I could be wrong - it was a long time ago).

A web site (http://www.skistats....resort=Heavenly) says that the lift had the following stats (accuracy not confirmed):

1,600 Vert
5,300 Length
6250 Bot El.
7850 Top El.

Based on these stats, I mapped out the following line, which nearly fits these stats (1,575V, 5226L, 6260B, 7850T)

Now, if you map out the lift along the line in the original image, you get a much shorter lift and dofferent vert (1,406V, 3893L, 6300B, 7850T). Which dosen't seem to fit. What would really help is if someone had a map of Heavenly from that era (1974-1979).

Hmm that would help...

The site could be inaccurate. What is the thin line if it is not where the chairlift went? I guess I will have to take your word for it, as I have pretty much no information on this lift.

Well, I sent a polite E-mail to Heavenly... I hope they answer it... :(

The thin line could be a power line or buried pipeline (gas or water). I see that a lot in the mountains around PC...or it could be the lift line. I just don't remember that well.

Floridaskier,

I used 3DEM & DLGV32 Pro (Global Mapper). Both are Freeware (search Google). It is somewhat involved and requires patience. Here is how it is done:

1) Get the DOQ and DEM from USGS, or other state site. 10 Meter scale works best.
2) Start with the DEM in DLGV32, then overlay the DOQ, using texture map. This will give you a good overhead, shaded relief map where you can draw in lifts and area boundaries.
3) Remove the DEM shaded relief and do a bitmap export of the DOQ only to a jpeg file, with vector lines included in the options. Caution: this can create extremely large and time consuming files.
4) Go to 3DEM and load the DEM.
5) Overlay the jpeg image w/lines and area boundaries.
6) Create a 3D image by setting the view area.
7) Export to bitmap.

I can give you more detail if need. It also works with DLGs (topo maps).

Below is a project I'm working on that I plan to present to the PC Planning Commission regarding a new development at PCMR.

What are DOQ and DEM? I take one is an actual photo while the other is a topo map. But the problem I'm having is entering the latitude and longitude positions on the map since I can't figure out how to insert them right and it's also asking for other dumb stuff like minutes which seems pointless since I have the longitude and latitude. I also tried another program called USA PHOTOMAPS where all you have to do is insert the latitude and longitude for specific area you want to bring up and it gave me all X's for the picture. I guess I would need screen shots to tell me what to do because this seems really complicated for me. Maybe we should create a new topic in the off topic area on how to use this program?

Got a very helpful reply. The liftline appearently followed the line viewable in the aerial images, to near Stagecoach. The Wells Fargo lift itself is now the Galaxy lift, having been moved. The possibility of the area reopening is real considering that it is in the master plan (along with the snowmaking necessary to operate it).

And dont forget Vail's money to make it happen. That would be a pretty big expansion, so maybe it will happen in the next 10 or so years. They would have to spend a lot on it, but i would sure be cool.

Yeah, the tree skiing there looks really neat. It definitely won't happen for another three years, and probably five. It shouldn't be too expensive, as I don't think that snowmaking is that pricey to install (though it is to run).
