Gatlinburg Fire

Sure, they could splice ... but I guess it comes down to a question of cost ... plus insurance may want a new rope just because ...
(no way to tell how long it ran w/the rope passing through flames, either ... might make the insurer nervous)
This doesn't happen often in the lift-world, so I'd bet there is a lot of learning going on "in the biz" from this event.

Couple of pictures from this news report:

That looks a lot more like soot damage to me, then actual heat "burned the paint off" damage ...
Either way, that's one incredibly durable, tough piece of Riblet engineering.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the lift in the pictures ( Riblet ) has nothing to do with the article that was posted by litz.

Actually it is ... the 'original' Gatlinburg Sky Lift (it's actually the 2nd lift on that site) was a yellow/orange Riblet double chair.
The top terminal was completely crisped by the fire; only the fact that they had left the lift running when they evacuated likely kept the haul rope from parting from the heat.
Note sure if their plans are a whole new lift from scratch, or a repair/rebuild of the existing one (plenty of riblet parts out on the market, for sure), but they have plans to replace/fix both the lift, and build a much larger attraction around it.
Their whole top-of-lift property was incinerated, so they have a clean slate to build whatever they want.

Cool ... now we have to wait and see if it has orange towers and yellow chairs like the Riblet did ...
