Just out of curiosity, if they have already confirmed Doppelmayr as the manufacturer, does that indicate that 1 or both will be high speed?

I could maybe see Lone Peak as a detach, but not sure about challenger. I think a new double would be best, the unload for anything else would be a challenge at best given the ridge you unload onto. Plus, if it is a FG, a double is the fastest fixed grip.

This may be out of the blue, but why do lots of resorts replace chairlifts with conveyors. Doesn't this seem counterintuitive.

It's a conveyor in the loading zone, in theory it helps reduce misloads. The debate over whether that's true or not isn't for this thread.
Just search Vail Mountaintop Express in YouTube, Donald's video should come up and show it clearly.

Conveyers are much simpler to load and unload than chairlifts for most beginners.

but don't you think it is good for beginners to learn to load a chairlift?

that's just like saying a beginner should learn on solid ice.

Sundance from what I have heard from a reliable source is going with a Doppelmayr for their new lift this time. SkyTrac has however signed some other projects that have yet to be announced by the respective clients, so I cannot disclose these projects at this time. Looks like this summer will be a busy one out west but many projects back east will be postponed due to the terrible season.

Big Sky facebook confirmed the Challenger Triple and Lone Peak high speed today. No details on Lone Peak though.

Spoke to the Doppelmayr survey crew on closing weekend, Challenger is a conveyor loading triple that is reusing many of the existing tower foundations except for the first few towers as the terminal placement will be slightly different. The new Lone Peak chair is going to be a fully loaded six pack with Heat and bubbles.

If you want to see progress the tram cam on the Big Sky page can be controlled to look right at the job site.

Is Tucker happening at Copper in time for 2016-17?

Peter mentioned this on his liftblog site...

"Rumor on Skilifts.org is SkyTrac will complete the abandoned, half-constructed Stagecoach lift on the Moonlight Basin side of Big Sky. I believe this Doppelmayr double came from the defunct Fortress Mountain in Alberta."

That got me thinking about the status of Fortress (it's currently cat skiing only). Somebody recently asked about it on Facebook and this was their reply...

"Hi Kim, we plan to operate one more season of cat skiing and have a planned resort opening the following season!"

I assume there will be some lift building involved if everything goes as planned.

Haven't heard anything about Fortress re-opening in a while.

Would also be surprised if any lifts were relocated from Fortress, as they were all in bad shape. Of the two doubles, the Backside chair (built in late 1970's) was in far better condition than the Farside.

Hi,

I was hiking up at Fortress last fall and they have about 8 new lifts surveyed. I posted on this here last fall also with some pics.

Hopefully along different alignments. The former Canadian and Farside terrain pods could be significantly larger with better lift locations.

I'll believe Fortress reopening on the first day it actually happens. This resort has seen so many plans not pan out.

Wish I had kept it, but I have a brochure from the early 80's showing lifts all of the way down to the highway, along with a base village development below the day lodge, and a lodge at the bottom of Farside.

No, and not for the foreseeable future. Amazing how one misquoted newspaper article got everyone all worked up :) We're looking more at replacing K-lift and upgrading Eagle, but no timeline there either.
