Relocated Chairlifts

SkiBachelor's Photo SkiBachelor 05 May 2004

I just thought I would start a topic about chairlifts that have been relocated to another ski area. And feel free to add to the list.

Clipper Triple at Deer Valley, UT (Yan Triple) ---> Warner Canyon, OR.
Thunderhead at Steamboat Springs, CO (Yan Double) ---> Blacktail Ski Area, MT.
The Olympic at Calgary's Olympic Park, Alberta (Hall Triple) ---> Blacktail Ski Area MT.
Crystal at Crystal Mountain, WA (SLI Double) ---> Blacktail Ski Area MT.
Midway Lift at Crystal Mountain, WA (POMA FG Quad) ---> Loup Loup Ski Area, WA.
Quincy/Wasatch Triple at Deer Valley, UT (Yan Triple) ---> Day Break Lift at The Canyons, UT.

A romour i have heard from several people:

The original Caribou chair @ Marmot Basin that used to go to the top of Caribou ridge was shortened to half of its original length and the part used somwhere else in Alberta possibly around Edson.

Anyone know anymore info?

Re: Caribou Chair
Never heard this rumour, but I often wondered what happened to excess pieces when they shortened that lift. The pieces (towers and carriers, basically) could be anywhere, really, but the purchaser would have also had to procure top and bottom terminals, as the shorter Caribou continues to use the original ones.

Still, I don't think it went to Edson, as the Caribou was (still is?) a Dopp. I don't think that Silver Summit's chair (pictured here) is a Dopp, although sharper eyes might correct me.

Crystal at Crystal Mountain, WA (SLI Double) ---> Blacktail Ski Area MT.

That lift was Campbell's Basin, shortened in 1989 (?) and then was removed same time as Midway Shuttle, I thought that lift ended up at Antelope Butte in Wyoming, same as the Iceberg Ridge chair.

In SAM, they were doing a story about Blacktail Ski Area and it said that's where it got its SLI double chair from.

C-5 did indeed go to Blacktail. I helped them take off a few of the chairs and talked to them about where it would end up. This was in 1997, the same year C-9 was removed and replaced by a sixpack. C-5 was shortened in 1988. C-2 Iceberg Ridge went away the same year, to Antelope Butte. C-9 ended up at Big Sky after sitting in F lot for several years; I don't know which lift it is currently.
Some other relocations:
Yodelin's C-1- (I'm making up numbers here as I have no idea what they were actually called) 1967 or 68 Riblet double- to Stevens Pass as Tye Mill
Yodelin's C-2- same vintage Hall- to Crystal as C-6
Arapahoe Basin's original Molly Hogan- 1971 or '72 Heron double- to Copper Mountain as C-1 lift
Stagecoach's C-1 (C-2?)- Heron Double- to Winter Park as the Timberline lift

Does anyone know if Vail's Chair 17 came from Beaver Creek originally? I had heard that at one point.

Altaskier- the lift you posted at Silver Summit is a Murray-Latta; it looks like the two we had at Baker except for the carriers being bail-type instead of centre-pole.

I thought a second lift from Crystal went to Antelope? Or was it parts of Green Valley that went there? I thought it was the old C-5, but I guess I was wrong.

Um cant think of too many outside resort relocations in my area, but the squaw peak lift --> lost lake life --> Silverado lift at squaw.

I also think dodge's Yan Triple (Chair 3) may be from another resort, but i dont know for sure yet.

Re: Silver Summit chair
Thanks for the info, Liftmech. So far, this now means there are two Murray-Lattas in Alberta: One at Silver Summit and one at Lake Louise.

Again asking about the Caribou chair:

I have a map from 1985 and the lift was shortened. Was it shortened when the triple was installed?

Caribou continued:
Yea, Edmontonskier, that's what I remember. When the triple went in they shortened Caribou to its current length. I think it was in '83 or '84.

Caribou:

A little research has led me to a tentative conclusion about the relocated lift. Kinosoo Ridge near Cold Lake was established about 15-20 years ago roughly about the same time as the Caribou was shortened. The Triple they have is a Doppelmayr but the towers are of an older style (at least they appear to be). My conclusion then is that Kinosoo Ridge received the used towers from Marmot Basin, upgraded it to a triple, and added terminals.

A photo of the lift.

Sounds logical to me. I may be the Cold Lake area on business later this year, so if I have time I'll stop by and check it out. If I can find an indication of red paint somewhere under the current green colour scheme we might very well have our lost Caribou towers!

Here is a reply I got from Bill Steel at Crystal Mountain.

When did the T-Bar get installed (1963) and when did it get removed (1983), was it sold, (scraped)

and if so, where?

Where did the old C-2 Iceberg Ridge chair go, was it sold (Antelope Butte, WY) or scrapped?

How about C-3 Green Valley?  I know the chairs were sold to individuals, did

the other components get scrapped or sold?

Lastly, C-6 High Campbell, was that purchased new or acquired from another

area?  Purchased from Yodelin Ski Area after they had closed down.

Opps, One more...  Where did C-5 Campbell's Basin lift go to? Black Tail, MT. And of

course, C-9? That is the “Cascade” lift at Big Sky, MT.,I remember seeing it in the lower parking lot for a few years.  Also C-11 Mid Way Shuttle went to Loop Loop, WA.

yes, Vail's chair 17 was the original centennial lift at Beaver Creek

So the T-Bar at Crystal went in the year after the area opened... I think we knew the rest of that list already. Nice new picture, Bill.
