The grip of a cabin nearing the summit of the final climb catastrophically failed, sending the cabin backwards down the line over a two-hundred foot cliff, where it struck another cabin, causing both to derail. There were four riders in the cabin whose grip failed and an undisclosed number of individuals in the lower cabin. Several people were critically injured, primarily suffering spinal injuries, as the gondolas are rounded and rolled upon impact with the ground.

Here's a photo of the line showing the final pitch in the distant background:

Mt. Bachelor may be installing the new East Side Express (aka the Sunriver Express | HSQ) next summer for the 2014-15 ski season.

Quote

And the best for last... this summer we have cut the new eastside lower catchline and trails in anticipation of Mt. Bachelor’s first new lift since
1996. With luck the new eastside express will be installed next summer, but we will introduce “hike out” and limited “tow out” service from the
new terrain this season! More details will follow as we approach the start of the season.

Since you are asking, Jay Peak marketing reps at the ski shows are saying that the Bonadventure Quad will be replaced with a Six Pack in summer 2014 for the 2014-15 season. The reason given to me by the Jay marketing rep at the Toronto Ski Show for it (Bonny replacement) not happening this year is that they were having difficulty locking down the final footprint position of the new hotel being built Stateside, which would include the patio out front and any hot tubs etc, which would affect final position of lower terminal, so they decided to delay one year and do it next year. Which makes the interesting question? When does the famous proposed West Bowl expansion happen? That was promised (sort of ) in the last Five year plan released four years ago. The deadline given then was West Bowl expansion lifts in place by 2015. I guess they meant it will be done in the summer of 2015. Don't you love marketingspeak.

JHMR's Crags lift may go in next summer.

Edit 2/1/14: Not happening in 2014, likely 2015.

Speaking of Jackson Hole. Assuming they didn't get it done this year, the old Casper chair should be installed at Magic Mountain ID for next year. I have no clue how much work they got done this summer if any.

I remember the first time I skied Jay Peak, must've been at least five years ago, the trail maps had the West Bowl area highlighted as "future expansion," now it's completely blank. They've been promising it for so long I won't believe it's there until I ski it.

In 1997 Whistler Blackcomb cut the lift line for the new Crystal chair. In 2013 we finally got a "new" lift.

Speaking of W-B, what ever happened to the cabin upgrade on the Whistler Village Gondola?

Would this include the removal of Rainbow?

Rainbow would stay put, but it will eventually end up being replaced by the Sunrise Express when it's converted to a HSS. According the the master plan, Rainbow would be shorted to about half its current length which is pretty pointless when the lower half is flatter than flat.

There is a rumor at Stratton that the cabin upgrade at whistler upgrade could happen soon. This was mentioned because Strattons gondola has the same cabins as whistlers gondola. Stratton is doing their upgrade next summer and will be upgrading to the same sigma diamond cabins that Whistler would be using for theirs.

Lutsen posted this article on their Facebook page today. Interestingly, in addition to discussing the new chairlift, the article mentions a new gondola. Not sure if that was the Trib's writer's error, or if a new gondola is really happening for next summer, but I had heard that rumor elsewhere before, so it's a possibility http://www.startribu.../233110541.html

I wouldn't assume anything about cabins. The CWA demo is very nice.

Mt. Bachelor just had its master plan approved. No word if anything will happen for 2014, but I could see the Sunrise Express HSS going in and the former Sunrise Express being relocated to become the new Rainbow HSQ. Looks like Outback Express is staying put for a few more years since it was just recently painted. There have been talks since 2009 about having it replaced, but it only runs weekends and during holiday breaks.

Went to the ski show and the employees marketing for Mt. Bachelor said that they would be shortening the Rainbow chair and dedicating it to terrain parks, shortening the Red Chair for some reason I don't know, and as you said installing the Sunrise HSS. They then said they would move the old Sunrise Express over to the new area to become the Eastside Express.

Just wondering, how did you find out Whistler would be investing in new cabins for the WV Gondola? That would be nice, the cabins have had their fair share of scratching and wearing, and the seats are pretty small.

It was talked about on the forum a few years ago. Nothing concrete.
