Sea to Sky Gondola

Peter's Photo Peter 20 Oct 2014

I checked out the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish, BC yesterday. It cost $22 million to build the gondola and facilities which opened in May. The lift line is extremely steep, especially the first section out of the bottom terminal. Vertical rise is 2,786 feet over 7,000 feet of length. Interestingly they did not cut any trees along most of the lift line. Most of the 14 towers are anchored into rock.

The gondola has 20 cabins and one cargo carrier. Cabin interval is 48 seconds and capacity is 600 per hour in each direction at the design speed of 984 fpm, although they were running much slower than that yesterday.

There was an incident on this lift back in February where a cabin struck tower 7 and fell to the ground. After that, they added an anemometer and video cameras to that tower.

I guess they can offer that deal since the extra weight going down saves them some electricity. :-) Thanks for sharing, great pics, where you heading next?
