Dyson Fan

I gave in - I just had to have one of these: the most recent product of the imagination of James Dyson, the English industrial designer who redesigned the household vacuum cleaner - creating a revolution. Nearly every manufacturer of household vacuum cleaners has now copied his design - I sincerely hope they each paid dearly for the rights. He tried for years to sell them on the idea - his words falling on deaf ears.

Dyson's designs always spring from completely fresh thinking, are always well-developed before going to market - and always work better than their competition. I'd be interested in anything he brings to market. I'd be even more interested in working with the guy.

The "air multiplier" is essentially a "blade-less" fan. Actually, it does use a small impeller inside the base of the unit that generates a modest flow at slightly increased pressure. This "compressed" air is directed through a thin ring of ports that surround the inside of a 10" ring. The ejected "high velocity" film streams along a carefully designed airfoil, creating a venturi effect that draws an additional large volume of air through the ring. The result is a substantial air flow that is perfectly free of turbulence.

If you've been considering buying one of these things, be assured that it works as advertised and that it's a technical delight.

Go James, Go.
Report: Sundance economic impact declines

June 11th, 2010 @ 3:12pm

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) -- A University of Utah report says the 2010 Sundance Film Festival had an economic impact of nearly $63 million and supported nearly 1,500 jobs.

Although attendance remained stable, the economic impact was about $29 million less than the previous year.

The report released Thursday says the festival attracted more than 40,000 visitors.

The majority came from outside Utah, notably from California, Colorado, New York, Texas and Florida.

The visitors spent nearly $25 million on accommodations, $10.5 million on meals and more than $2 million on transportation.

The festival generated about $3.3 million in tax revenue and more than $18 million worth of media coverage.

Excellent Scotch

My wife Roxy - bless her tea-totalling soul - has recently supplied me with some great single-malts. I'm new to all three.

Dalwhinnie (smokey): 15 yr
Aberlour: 12 yr
Dalmore: 12 yr.

All began aging in oak (the Dalwhinnie in bourbon casks). All three finished in sherry casks. Scotches this good benefit from just a dribble of water - it brings out the flavor.

Any other scotch drinkers out there? What labels do you prefer?

BOARD INDEX

Since any peek at the online users "last click" status reveals that "Board Index" is BY FAR the most visited location, I thought I'd better post something with that title.

Just for grins, here is a handy Excel sheet set up to be a self-calculating bill of materials. Play with it and see if you like it.
Normally, I hide columns I and J so that it prints nicely on an 8.5 x 11 sheet. One of those columns is needed only once and the other is a calculated value of interest to no one. Once all entries are made, I lock the sheet.
<Matbill.0.unprotect> is an unlocked blank sheet (careful - you can overwrite the formulas). Matbill.0 is a locked blank. Matbill.1 and Matbill.2 are worksheets I have used for previous projects.

I have acquired '98 Mercedes Benz SLK230 Kompressor that is showroom perfect. Low mileage, one owner (before me), seductive as a naked virgin - it is an absolute joy. Though it has very low mileage, a car this old can be a challenge to troubleshoot when the not-so-informative "check engine" indicator lights. It's a lot like a Doppelmayr lift control (hmm - same country). Anyone out there who owns an MB knows well the cost of official MB service. For those who feel able to do their own work - given the fair chance of sufficient information - I highly recommend the following website: http://www.benzworld...mercedes-benz/. Basic membership is free - enhanced membership costs $35. Many professional "tuned-in" MB mechanics are online at any particular time. For nearly any issue, cogent explanations - often accompanied by photographic step-by-step instructions - abound. It's so nice to be able to communicate with a knowledgeable person who has already done what you're trying to do. This site WORKS.

Funny quote L-P vs. D-CTEC

I came across this article about John Hickenlooper, who is running for governor of Colorado. Funny quote below...
http://coloradoindependent.com/50887/hickenlooper-charms-supporters-with-folksy-plea-for-cooperation

Quote

On a visit to Leitner-Poma of America, a ski lift manufacturer located in Grand Junction, Hickenlooper said he asked where they got their steel and found out it came from Tennessee. “I asked if they had ever talked to the guys in Pueblo and they were like, ‘Oh, there’s a steel mill in Pueblo?’ so now they are talking.”

He said he also learned that Leitner-Poma was competing with an Austrian firm for the contract on a new lift at one of Colorado’s major ski areas. Hickenlooper said he called the ski area president and talked about the marketing advantages of being able to tell skiers that the new lift had been built in Colorado. “I mean how many skiers do they get from Austria?” he asked the crowd.

Lift is being (mostly) built in the US and the money's going to Europe either way, right?

SlopeEdge Networks

Hello everyone,

SlopeEdge is a fan run website that discusses skiing in the Ottawa and Laurentian areas primarily but is expanding to start covering other regions. It is a blog type site, chronicling ski outings with reports and pictures.

Now, we have expanded once again to host a forums discussion board. Please feel free to register and post your outings (In English or French). The idea is similar to ZoneSki.com (The premiere French skiing website in Quebec), except we are in English. I will check the forums daily and choose appropriate posts (having to do with ski outings) and they will be featured on the front page. Try to include pictures, so that it will appear in the feature box on the front page.

Check it out today, SlopeEdge.com

No posts or information related to Tremblant will be allowed, as you already have a fantastic, honest, well established and definitive source of information already, Tremblant-Insider.com . For everything else, there's Slopeedge.com

Anyone own a Toyota that is involved in the recent recall?
Do these cars use a direct mechanical linkage for throttling or the recently more-common "fly-by-wire" solution?

I have a sinking suspicion that the latter is the case - and further that the first recall for "loose floormats" was actually the same problem as this new one. Toyota claims to be unsure of the cause as of this writing. I personally am not so sure about that.
We may be seeing the first instance of a hazardous software malfunction in the new breed of automobiles. I'm betting that is the case.
The plan being to skin up the hill and ski down a few times per week. I am 6ft tall and wiegh around 180lbs. I am a good downhill skier and snowboarder. I am going to be spending most or all of my time on groomed runs. I was looking for some feedback/advice on what gear to look for. Especially regarding ski length and feedback on what any of you may ride and how you like it.

In the year 1818, Joseph Mohr was the assistant pastor of the church in Oberndorf. Imagine him walking one evening through the village. The sun has already set, but it's not very dark or scary. There is fresh snow on the ground, and it's a clear, calm, moonlit night, with no wind at all. Imagine how bright it is, with the moon reflecting off all the snow and light spilling out of the windows of the houses in the village.

Everyone else was already inside for the night, but Joseph didn't mind being out alone. To him, the silence of the village seemed calm and peaceful. But there was another silence that made Joseph sad. It was nearly Christmas and the organ in the church was broken. There was no time to fix it before Christmas. He knew the villagers could sing without an organ, but it seemed a shame not to have special music for Christmas. He had been worrying about it on and off all day, but now the peacefulness of the quiet, snowy village made him feel calm again and helped him to remember that, to him, the important thing about Christmas was not the music, it was the baby Jesus.

Joseph knew that Israel is a much warmer place than Austria, and that it probably wasn't snowing in Bethlehem on the night that Jesus was born. But he suddenly felt that the night that Jesus was born must have been quiet and peaceful, too, with almost everyone asleep and with a special star brightening the sky. While he was thinking of this, he thought up the words to a song about Christmas.

When he got home, he wrote down the words. The next day was already Christmas eve. He took the words to his friend Franz Gruber. Franz was the village schoolmaster and also the organist at the church. He wrote some music for the words, and gave it to Joseph that same day. That night, even though the organ was still broken, there was still something special for Christmas. When the people came to church that night, they heard a guitar, two solo voices, and a chorus singing a new Christmas carol, a carol that since that time has become one of the most loved and most sung Christmas carols in the world

The Boy who Ran Away on the New York City Subway

The boy in this New York Times article that showed up about a week ago has Asperger's Syndrome, much like I do:

RUNAWAY SPENT 11 DAYS IN THE SUBWAYS:

By KIRK SEMPLEPublished: November 23, 2009 Day after day, night after night, Francisco Hernandez Jr. rode the subway. He had a MetroCard, $10 in his pocket and a book bag on his lap. As the human tide flowed and ebbed around him, he sat impassively, a gangly 13-year-old boy in glasses and a red hoodie, speaking to no one.

After getting in trouble in class in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, and fearing another scolding at home, he had sought refuge in the subway system. He removed the battery from his cellphone. “I didn’t want anyone to scream at me,” he said.

All told, Francisco disappeared for 11 days last month — a stretch he spent entirely in subway stations and on trains, he says, hurtling through four boroughs. And somehow he went undetected, despite a round-the-clock search by his panicked parents, relatives and family friends, the police and the Mexican Consulate.

Since Oct. 26, when a transit police officer found him in a Coney Island subway station, no one has been able to fully explain how a boy could vanish for so long in a busy train system dotted with surveillance cameras and fliers bearing his photograph.

But this was not a typical missing-person search. Francisco has Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism that often causes difficulty with social interaction, and can lead to seemingly eccentric behavior and isolation. His parents are Mexican immigrants, who say they felt the police were slow to make the case a priority.

“Maybe because you might not understand how to manage the situation, because you don’t speak English very well, because of your legal status, they don’t pay you a lot of attention,” said Francisco’s mother, Marisela García, 38, a housecleaner who immigrated in 1994 and has struggled to find ways to help her son.

The police, however, say they took the case seriously from the start, interviewing school officials and classmates, canvassing neighborhoods and leafleting all over the city.

Francisco says his odyssey wound through three subway lines: the D, F and No. 1. He would ride a train until its last stop, then wait for the next one, wherever it was headed. He says he subsisted on the little he could afford at subway newsstands: potato chips, croissants, jelly rolls, neatly folding the wrappers and saving them in the backpack. He drank bottled water. He used the bathroom in the Stillwell Avenue station in Coney Island.

Otherwise, he says, he slipped into a kind of stupor, sleeping much of the time, his head on his book bag. “At some point I just stopped feeling anything,” he recalled.

Though the boy’s recollections are incomplete, and neither the police nor his family can retrace his movements in detail, the authorities say that he was clearly missing for 11 days and that they have no evidence he was anywhere but the subway.

For his parents, the memories of those 11 frantic days — the dubious sightings, the dashed hopes and no sleep — remain vivid. “It’s the most terrible thing,” his mother said in Spanish.

Just what propelled Francisco to take flight on Oct. 15 is unclear. Administrators at his school, Intermediate School 281, would not comment. But Francisco said he had failed to complete an assignment for an eighth-grade class, and was scolded for not concentrating.

After school, he phoned his mother to say he was heading home. She told him the school had called and she wanted a serious talk with him.

His first impulse was to flee. He walked eight blocks to the Bay Parkway station and boarded a D train. It seemed a safe place to hide, he said.

When he did not arrive home, his mother started to panic. In January, after another problem at school, Francisco had left home and ridden the subway, but returned after five hours. “We thought this time it would be the same,” Ms. García said. “But unfortunately it wasn’t.”

Her husband, also named Francisco Hernandez, went to the nearest subway station and waited for several hours while she stayed at home on Bay 25th Street with their 9-year-old daughter, Jessica. After midnight, the couple called the police, and two officers from the 62nd Precinct visited their apartment.

The next morning, Mr. Hernandez, 32, a construction laborer, borrowed a bicycle and scoured Bensonhurst. He and his wife separately explored the subway from Coney Island to Midtown Manhattan.

They had been trying to help their son for years. Born in Brooklyn, Francisco grew up a normal child in many ways, his mother said, earning mostly passing grades and enjoying drawing and video games. But he had no friends outside school, and found it difficult to express emotions. A gentle, polite boy, he spoke — when he did speak — in a soft monotone.

In 2006, his parents had him evaluated at a developmental disabilities research clinic on Staten Island, where his Asperger’s was diagnosed. The clinic’s chief neuropsychologist concluded that Francisco struggled in situations that demanded a “verbal or social response.”

“His anxiety level can elevate, and he freezes in confusion because he does not know what to do or say,” the doctor wrote.

After he disappeared, his parents printed more than 2,000 color leaflets with a photo of Francisco wearing the same red hoodie; friends and relatives helped post them in shops, on the street and throughout the subway in Brooklyn. The family hand-lettered fluorescent-colored signs.

“Franky come home,” one pleaded in Spanish. “I’m your mother I beg you I love you my little boy.”

Francisco said he never saw the signs. He lost sense of time. He was prepared, he said, to remain in the subway system forever.

No one spoke to him. Asked if he saw any larger meaning in that, he said, “Nobody really cares about the world and about people.”

Sightings were reported. An image of a boy resembling Francisco had been captured by a video game store’s security camera, but he turned out to be someone else, the police said. A stranger called Mr. Hernandez to say he had spotted Francisco with some boys at a movie theater in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. A search turned up nothing.

Ms. García said one detective told her the boy was probably hiding out with a friend. She replied that her son had no friends to hide out with. Frustrated, the parents sought help from the Mexican Consulate. Officials there contacted the Spanish-language news media, which ran brief newspaper and television reports about Francisco, and called the police — “to use the weight that we have to encourage them, to tell them that we have an emergency,” a consular spokesman said.

Six days after Francisco’s disappearance, on Oct. 21, the case shifted from the police precinct to the Missing Persons Squad, and the search intensified. A police spokeswoman explained that a precinct must complete its preliminary investigation before the squad takes over.

The squad’s lead investigator on the case, Detective Michael Bonanno, said he turned the focus to the subway. He and his colleagues blanketed the system with their own signs, rode trains and briefed station attendants.

About 6 a.m. on Oct. 26, the police said, a transit officer stood on the D train platform at the Stillwell Avenue station studying a sign with Francisco’s photo. He turned and spotted a dirty, emaciated boy sitting in a stopped train. “He asked me if I was Francisco,” the boy recalled. “I said yes.”

Asked later how it felt to hear about the work that had gone into finding him, Francisco said he was not sure. “Sometimes I don’t know how I feel,” he said. “I don’t know how I express myself sometimes.”

Apart from leg cramps, he was all right physically, and returned to school a week later. But Ms. García said she was still trying to learn how to manage her son’s condition. Though doctors had recommended that Francisco be placed in a small school for children with learning disorders, she said, officials at his school told her he was testing fine and did not need to be transferred.

“I tell him: ‘Talk to me. Tell me what you need. If I ever make a mistake, tell me,’ ” she said. “I don’t know, as a mother, how to get to his heart, to find out what hurts.”

One of the fluorescent signs hangs on the living room wall. The others are stacked discreetly in a corner, and Ms. García said she was not ready to discard them.

“It’s not easy to say it’s over and it won’t happen again,” she said.

Meteor in Utah

Hello guys,

I thought I would share with you about the meteor in Utah on early morning wednesday. My bedroom window faces the busy street, I often see cars and trucks headlights include ambulance and police flash lights through my window to the walls that I got to used to it. On early morning wednesday, I wake up and noticed the bright flash (only few seconds) on my window and I saw very bright white on the wall. I said that wow, one of the trucks had too bright headlight. I don't realize it was meteor. Until yesterday, I saw the TV news about it. Shocked. Meteor turned day from night only few seconds.

here is TV news:

http://www.ksl.com/?nid=148&sid=8714738

By the way, in 1993, I was in southern California, I walked out to my car and I saw the meteor in the day, not night. The color was bright blue and the tail was green. It was beautiful.

I live in Utah, in about 2000, I drove down the hill and I saw kind one like meteor but I found out it was missle from southern California (Ventura Country). Wow, the missle looked like meteor. I never forget this.

It's an official website from Sugarloaf (Boyne Resort in Maine.) The site is a collection of user-submitted pictures of Sugarloaf stickers plastered in strange places, many at other ski areas. I'd be interested to know what people think of the idea of a ski area promoting this. Seems like resort marketing departments love to hand out stickers, but isn't it annoying when they end up on their own lifts?

Warren Miller Entertainment sues Level 1 Productions

Boulder filmmaker sues over use of Warren Miller
By Jason Blevins
The Denver Post
Posted: 09/23/2009 01:58:27 PM MDT
Updated: 09/23/2009 03:07:28 PM MDT

Boulder's Warren Miller Entertainment is suing a Denver ski filmmaker for enlisting filmmaker Warren Miller in its latest movie.

Level 1 Production's ski film "Refresh" first premiered Sept. 11 at Denver's Bluebird Theater, and 10 days later, Warren Miller Entertainment filed a trademark-infringement lawsuit against Level 1 in Denver's U.S. District Court.

It seems as though the venerable Miller, now 84 and living in Washington state, sold the right to his voice in a 1995 deal with Warren Miller Entertainment. That deal, forged seven years after Miller sold the film company he created in 1948, gave Warren Miller Entertainment "exclusive right, in perpetuity, in all media, to the name, the personal endorsement, use of voice and the likeness of Warren Miller."

So when Miller sat down with Josh Berman and his decade-old Level 1 Productions crew and warbled utterances such as "If you wait until next year to do it, you'll be one year older," and other narrative quips for "Refresh," federal trademark laws were broken, argues Warren Miller Entertainment.

The lawsuit says that Warren Miller Entertainment has been "irreparably injured and damaged" by Level 1's unauthorized use of the Warren Miller image and asks the court to force Berman to stop using the filmmaker's famous name and voice.

Berman, a pioneer in "new school" ski movies that appeal to younger skiers, says he and Miller "thoroughly vetted the whole process every step of the way" to make sure everything was "done legally and not in violation of any contracts or laws."

"We approached Warren, and Warren was very receptive to the idea," said Berman, whose marketing pitch for "Refresh" notes that Miller's participation "is the ultimate way for us to bridge the gap between our younger core audience and the more traditional ski film fans."

At a recent showing of "Refresh" in Montreal, the Warren Miller lawsuit reports that the young audience "was chanting 'Warren, Warren' over and over."

Warren Miller Entertainment representatives were not immediately available for comment today. Level 1's website now includes a disclaimer that neither the company nor the new movie has any relationship or connection with Warren Miller Entertainment.

Judge Marcia Krieger on Tuesday denied Warren Miller Entertainment's plea for a temporary restraining order that would prevent tonight's Boulder viewing of "Refresh," saying the company had not proven that further viewings would pose "immediate and irreparable injury."

9!

Ok so yesterday at 9:09 I got to see the new animated film 9. And while I could gush for pages about how absolutely stellar, amazing and incredible this movie is I'll try to keep it brief, key word being try...

And note that there shouldn't be any spoilers, these are just general impressions etc...

So I didn't know much about this movie till McP and I went to the panel on it at Comic Con. The panel of the directer, the producers and a couple voice actors was very interesting and after seeing the trailer and a couple clips I was blown away by the animation. It's so dark and gritty and I loved it! While there is nothing wrong with happy, bright, cutesy, comedic, or nice animation the portion of the world that is almost never animated (and even more rarely with commercial success) is dramatic darker animation. However this section of the field is really my favorite. Not to say that I don't like happier animation, I do, but darker animation is just pure heaven for me, with movies like All Dogs Go To Heaven, Secret of NIMH, Titan AE, Rock and Rule, etc being just some of the examples.

So after seeing that this film was going to be in that vein I've been uber excited about it's release since Comic Con, and thus saw it on the release date of 9/9/09.

To put it briefly the animation is mind blowing. The world is dark, ominous, and absoluetly epic. Certainly we can think of some of the most complex animated worlds and put this one right up there with them. I'd love to go back and watch this over and over just to try and attempt to see all the little details of this utterly incredible world. The detail is amazing, and the design is also equally amazing. Just really well done all the way around. The action is mind blowing, and even the stitch people (the characters) work much better than I thought they would. In fact they were what I had once thought going to be more a liability to the movie, they are in fact one of it's greatest assets.

The story while being your basic apocolpytic survival story is very well done. It flows nicely, (albeit with a bit of a pacing issue in my opinion at the beginning (far too fast)) and lays out well in front of the viewer.

Now let me remind you this movie is incredible, but I feel it wouldn't be right not to mention a couple small nit picks of it...

At the beginning, and the ending to a lesser extent I felt the pacing was rushed. It's only a 81 minute movie and it maybe could have benefited from some more time in order to get the pacing to work better.

The only other thing is they used some cliched moments in the end (won't say what, or when or anything but you'll know them when you see them) which didn't really detract from the movie, it's just they weren't needed so why do them I guess is my point. It's not like they're bad, just unnecessary. In such an original film I just thought that they felt a bit forced, and unneeded.

Finally during the panel at Comic Con someone asked the panel about how darker animation tends to fail and be 'studio killing flops' as she put it giving examples such as Iron Giant or Titan AE and she wondered how they were going to effectively market this movie in order for it not to follow in those other movies lack of success at the box office. Their response was basically that their marketing department wasn't there, which wasn't really all that encouraging. However I think this movie may have a shot in some aspects where those others didn't. 9 was based on an animated short that got much web publicity so that could help increase it's exposure and it also seems that they have done a fairly decent job in getting the movie out into the public via commercials etc. Granted 9 has an estimated budget of 33 million which seems not very much to have to make back (over a decade ago Cat's Don't Dance's budget was about that) so I have high hopes that it won't be a studio killing flop at least money wise, the real key here is if this movie is enough to open the door to more animation in this vein, which that I am more unsure about but then again with even Pixar taking on much more serious topics in UP (incredible movie, by the way, possibly best thing Disney or Pixar have ever done) we may see some development in the darker animated field, which I certainly hope we do.

Anyway incredible movie which I certainly suggest all of you see, and hope you get out to see it especially if you're an animation (specifically darker) fan (the only way you'll get more is by supporting it).

Thanks for reading this (should have been but wasn't) brief review and have a great day!

Snowbird Owner Plans Alaska Coal Mine

I saw this posted on another ski forum:
http://www.ecofactory.com/news/climate-irony-utah-ski-resort-owner-plans-giant-alaska-coal-mine-081909

Climate Irony: Utah Ski Resort Owner Plans Giant Alaska Coal Mine

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, August 19, 2009 (ENS) - The largest coal strip mine in Alaska history proposed by the owner of the Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort in Utah has aroused the concern of conservationists and skiiers groups concerned about the mine's contribution to global warming.

Richard Bass, who owns the Utah resort, has partnered with William H. Hunt to form PacRim Coal LLC, which has submitted permit applications to build a giant coal mine that the groups say would not only raise the planet's temperature but also destroy 11 miles of prime salmon streams feeding the Cook Inlet.

"It's sadly ironic that the owner of a business that is solely dependent upon heavy snowfall and consistent winters is pushing a project that is a direct threat to the ski industry and completely contrary to the ideals of outdoor recreation," said Ryan Demmy Bidwell with the Ski Area Citizen's Coalition.

The coal mine on the Chuitna River, about 45 miles west of Anchorage, would be the third largest strip mine in the United States. PacRim Coal, a Delaware corporation backed by Texas investors, hopes to extract 300 million tons over 25 years.

Nearly all the coal excavated from the mine, would be exported to coal markets in China and other Pacific Rim countries. When burned, Chuitna River coal would emit more than 27 million tons of carbon dioxide, the groups calculate.

"Coal is the single largest source of global warming pollution on the planet. We're already seeing impacts on climate and weather patterns in the West. And this man wants to sell millions of tons of coal to China so it can be burned? Utah skiers and backcountry enthusiasts should be outraged," said Bidwell.

In addition to its contributions to global warming, the mine would destroy one of Alaska's most productive salmon fisheries.

This year, the Chuitna River was one of the few rivers in the Cook Inlet region where fisherman enjoyed a healthy king salmon run. But according to three scientific analyses of the mine's impacts released today, if it is built, salmon fisheries along the Chuitna River would suffer severe long-term damage and never fully recover.

PacRim's reclamation plan is based on digging a "new stream" to replicate the physical appearance of the original. But Dr. Margaret Palmer, who analyzed the company's restoration plans, says there is no evidence that simply restoring the shape of a channel will bring back salmon runs, riparian corridors or other essential biological functions.

Past stream restoration projects involving channel modifications with much less damage have been unsuccessful, making PacRim's plans a grand experiment with a stream that produces a significant portion of Chuitna's salmon, said Dr. Palmer, professor and director of the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, University of Maryland.

"There is no scientific evidence that wetlands or streams can be put back together to be living, healthy ecosystems after the kind of mining impacts described in the PacRim reports," said Palmer. "The science just isn't there. Experimentation should not be confused with sound, science-based knowledge."

"An extensive search of scientific literature, and discussions with stream restoration and in-stream flow experts did not yield a single documented example of strip-mined salmon habitat being successfully restored," writes Lance Trasky, retired habitat biologist, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, who authored another of the studies.

Professor Mark Wipfli, an expert on riverine ecology and food webs with the Institute of Arctic Biology, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, wrote in the third study, "Re-creating the complex three-dimensional diversity of interconnected underground sediments in salmon habitat, such as Middle Creek, would be impossible."

The conservationists and skiiers groups say the mine proposal is a misstep for Bass, especially since Snowbird Resort has been an active participant in the National Ski Area Association's Sustainable Slopes program. Environmental initiatives of the program include reducing greenhouse gas emissions from resorts in order to protect the climate.

"Snowbird has been one of the leading ski areas in terms of addressing global warming," said Mark Clemens with the Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club. "In fact, they were the top award recipient from the NSAA in 2007. That's what makes this proposed coal mine by Mr. Bass so troubling."

In a statement Monday, Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort said, "We are proud of our nearly 40-year environmental record."

"Snowbird has helped lead the ski industry in environmental stewardship and undertaken award-winning efforts to clean up and preserve the local environment in and around Little Cottonwood Canyon. In 2007 we received the Golden Eagle Award for Overall Environmental Excellence for our precedent-setting mine cleanup project in American Fork Canyon," the resort said.

"Snowbird is one of owner Dick Bass's diverse business interests, each of which operates independently," the resort said. "It is not appropriate for Snowbird to comment on Mr. Bass's investments beyond those pertaining to our resort."

"We want to keep Utah cool and Alaska wild," said Dan Ritzman, the western director of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign. "We aim to show that sparing the climate hundreds of millions of tons of CO2 pollution and protecting this fragile fishery are better long-term investments for local economies in Utah and Alaska. In today's transition to a greener economy, investments in coal are simply wasted dollars."

My Breckenridge Hike 8/12/09

I went to Breckenridge yesterday with my father and sister.

Our intent was to ride the Alpine Slide and Human Maze.

The trip up was sort of a nightmare, getting from our house in Aurora to Breckenridge. First, we had to deal with rush hour on I-25 (no fun), but there was an unexpected delay near Frisco, where road construction took westbound I-70 down from three lanes to one lane (and instantly).

Once we got up to the Fun Park, we started out with four rides on the Alpine Slide. The first three rides were in the far right (or advanced) lane, which I like the most. The fourth ride was in the middle lane (due to backup on the right lane). Afterwards, my sister Maggie and I did the human maze. We had done this before on a trip several weeks earlier, and I had managed to make it (that time) through the maze in six minutes, despite how difficult it was. Afterwards, we ate lunch at the Bergenhof.

Now onto the hike on Peak 8.

We started out by going up the Colorado SuperChair to this hiking path that leads to a hill from which you can look upon the upper terminal of the Rocky Mountain SuperChair.

But I noticed that the hiking path continued on. We took this hiking path, which started climbing several times. It eventually took us all the way to the midway turn on the uphill line of the T-Bar, where it turned and headed down to an access road. The access road lead us over to meet up with the Columbine run near the top of Duke's Run. From there, we headed back towards the Vista Haus, and I noticed that the Rocky Mountain SuperChair had the maintenance carrier on line at tower 15, in place of Chair #28 (which explains why I saw Chair #28 at the bottom without a hangar arm). I got a lot of pictures of the Rocky Mountain SuperChair and the T-Bar, and we continued on to the Vista Haus, riding the Colorado SuperChair back down.

Afterwards, I decided to do some bungee jumping. Despite the wait, it was worth it. It was a very thrilling experience to jump to the height of the top floor of the Bergenhof!

After that, we made two more Alpine Slide rides: one on the middle lane, and a final one on the right lane, before I hit the maze again.

On all of the human mazes, you are trying to find the letters M, A, Z, and E, (spell the word MAZE for me), and get out of the maze. If you complete the maze in eight minutes or less, you get a prize. Yesterday, on my first time through the maze, it took me only five minutes to complete the maze, although on the second time, it took six minutes.

I had a very FUN day yesterday! I'll post some pictures in the photos part of the forum in a few days.
The world's first suspended roller coaster took coaster design to a new level when it opened in 1984. Legions of fans—young and old alike—often cite it as their introduction to the coaster experience.

USF Kicker Injures Back in Fall from Gondola at Busch Gardens

I bet now he wishes he would of stopped it first to check the door.
USF Football Player From Lake Wales Falls From Busch Gardens Ride
Maikon Bonani, 20, USF's starting kicker, was working Saturday at the Skyride attraction. After sending passengers on a gondola out of the station, Bonani thought the door might be unlocked and held onto the door to check it while guests sat on the ride, according to team and park officials.

He held on as the gondola took off - then 35 feet above the ground - let go and dropped into a landscaped area, the park's statement said. However, the park did not specifically name Bonani in its statement.

"He was trying to make sure they were safe," said park spokeswoman Jill Revelle of those on the ride. She said no one else was injured.

Park management was reviewing safety procedures with employees and no further information was released Sunday by the park.

Bonani was responsive but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. He was listed in fair condition at St. Joseph's Hospital.

USF football coach Jim Leavitt told the St. Petersburg Times that he spoke to Bonani by phone and later visited him. Leavitt said Bonani may have injured his T12 vertebra, which is in the lower portion of the spine.

"He's in pain, but doing fine and resting," Leavitt said.

Leavitt said that if Bonani faced a long recovery, he could redshirt, or sit out a year from the football team, and still be able to play four years at USF.

Bonani's former Lake Wales football coach, Rod Shafer, was trying to contact Bonani's family members Sunday. He said they may be visiting family in Brazil.

Shafer said Bonani has a younger brother, Marcelo, who is Lake Wales' kicker. Shafer has tried to contact him by e-mail, but did not receive a response Sunday. Marcelo was not expected to report for team workouts until the end of the month, he said.

Calls by Shafer to Bonani's hospital room were not returned Sunday.

Bonani grew up in Brazil and moved with his family to Lake Wales when he was 11 years old.

He learned English when he was 11, and later became an athletic standout, playing football, soccer and tennis for the Highlanders.

"Maikon's the best we've ever had," Shafer said. "He was a phenomenal student. We're talking a 4.0 student, valedictorian. And he was an outstanding athlete."

Football, like English, was something he picked up late, trying out for the team in the spring of his freshman year at Lake Wales after earning team MVP honors in soccer. He kicked on the junior varsity team as a sophomore, then made 16 of 19 field-goal attempts as a junior, earning All-State honors. He was Polk County player of the year in soccer in 2007 and was Lake Wales' No. 1 tennis player, helping it finish fifth in the state.

In his collegiate debut last September, set against the backdrop of a nationally televised showdown against No. 13 Kansas, Bonani kicked the winning 43-yard field goal to help the Bulls pull off a 37-34 comeback victory.

"If there's any way he can overcome this, he will," Shafer said of Bonani's accident. "He's a tough son of a gun."

United Breaks Guitars

Band turns airline woes into Internet infamy
Halifax band overnight web sensation
Halifax's Dave Carroll is one of YouTube's newest stars thanks to a song he wrote called "United Breaks Guitars." Carroll wrote the song with his band in response to his experience with United Airlines last year, when his $3,500 custom-made guitar was severely damaged during a trip. (July 9, 2009)

Jul 09, 2009 04:30 AM
Michael Oliveira
THE CANADIAN PRESS

When Halifax's Dave Carroll got off his United Airlines flight last spring and discovered his $3,500 custom-made guitar was severely damaged – allegedly by overzealous luggage handlers – at first he was mad.

When the airline's customer service team refused to address his complaints to his satisfaction, he was incensed.

But the songwriter decided to shrug off his anger, and instead wrote a song about his experience.

On Wednesday, that song, "United Breaks Guitars," was the most popular music video on YouTube, with about 168,000 views, and to Carroll's shock, his phone rang all day with calls from across the continent.

One minute it was CBS asking him to play the network's morning show, the next it was CNN, asking for details about his story for The Situation Room With Wolf Blitzer.

What started off as a lark has turned into far more exposure than Carroll has ever had with his band, Sons of Maxwell. "I've been at this for well over 15 years, slugging away at it and ... this has been an incredible lift to our career and my career as a solo artist," he said.

After months of badgering United for some sort of compensation he gave up, and told the last company representative that he spoke with that he planned to write a trilogy of songs about the experience.

"The whole thing has been a challenge artistically and that's what makes this so fun," he said, adding that he's no longer seeking any kind of compensation from United.

"I think not only does it resonate with people because it's an airline song, which all people can relate to, but I think the fact it's a lighthearted song and fun is something that everyone can appreciate."

90 degree loading over regular loading

This probably has been discussed in another thread, but I'd like to see what your preferences are when it comes to the loading terminals of high speed quads and six packs: do you like 90 degree loading, or do you like the old fashioned method of loading.

Note: This is based off of Colorado stats. I ski over twelve times a ski season, and remember, my favorite areas are Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, and Keystone. Here in Colorado, all but three of the high speed six packs I know of have 90 degree loading. Those exceptions are the Doppelmayr high speed six pack at Durango, the Super Bee lift at Copper Mountain, and the Independence SuperChair* in Breckenridge. But in high speed quads, there are more regular style loading ones than with 90 degree loading. And even then, most of the 90 degree loading ones are from within the past eight years, such as the Birds of Prey Express at Beaver Creek (90 degree loading, only Doppelmayr CTEC high speed quad I can think of in Colorado with such loading), the Peak 8 SuperConnect at Breckenridge (90 degree loading at bottom terminal, and Leitner Poma built), and the highest lift in North America, the Imperial Express SuperChair (which is a rare style since it has both 90 degree loading and 90 degree unloading).

*Before the bottom terminal was moved to its current location in 2008, the Independence SuperChair had 90 degree loading.

It's just I'd like to see what the community believes is better in lift loading. It's like lifts with gates vs lifts with no gates type.
